What is an Activation?
I just purchases the Technet Standard Edition. I read that each of the 2 keys can be activated up to 10 times. But what exactly does this mean? For instance, I already used 1 key to activate my Windows 7. If I decide next month to do a fresh install of windows (format disk and re-install) and then activate again is that 2 activations or still just 1? If I upgrade my motherboard and re-install windows, is that another activation? It's rediculous if either of those end up being another activation. Thanks.

this means you can use 1 key to activate 10 different PCs. With 2 Keys you can activate 20 different PCs."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" I'm going to leave the forum on 31th March 2011 if I don't get a Feedback about the SPAM of 2 MVPs. So if you want an answer, be fast so that I can help you before I leave the Technet forum.

Each activation counts and will deduct one activation from the total number. If you have a need for installing the same machine several times for testing purposes I suggest you test in an unactivated state.

MS should allow us to to view the activations for a key (such as the date and machine name depending on what info they have) and allow us to delete it. This would de-actvate a machine if it is still active, but allow us to better manage our key.

I would love to see some form of managing the activation. However I think that this would ruffle a lot of feathers for some people who don't want Microsoft keeping tabs on them and their data since the activation system is the same one used for Retail purchases as well. Currently I think it doesn't keep any personally identifiying information other than the thumbprint (uniquely generated identifier) of the machine doing the activation for when the key is used again. my 0.02 r/ johnJohn Wildes | Senior Enterprise Architect | United Airlines | Desktop Engineering

Is there any way to remove an activation. no, not that I know. If you activate the same license on the old PC again (Windows was damaged, you need to install again) it doesn't count as a new PC."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" I'm going to leave the forum on 31th March 2011 if I don't get a Feedback about the SPAM of 2 MVPs.
