What files to Download for W7 SP1?
Hello, SP1 is not to see in Windows Update, so go to the Update Central. Okay. Nice description how to do. But wrong words? On the final download page there are not only a 32-bit and 64 bit version, there are 10 files: 7601.17514.101119-1850_Update_Sp_Wave1-GRMSP1.1_DVD.iso 1953.3MBHerunterladen: Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.AMD64CHK.Symbols.msi 262.7MBHerunterladen: Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.AMD64FRE.Symbols.msi 287.8MBHerunterladen: Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.IA64CHK.Symbols.msi 241.8MBHerunterladen: Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.IA64FRE.Symbols.msi 193.4MBHerunterladen: Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.X86CHK.Symbols.msi 294.5MBHerunterladen: Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.X86FRE.Symbols.msi 330.6MBHerunterladen: windows6.1-KB976932-IA64.exe 511.6MBHerunterladen: windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe 903.2MBHerunterladen: windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe 537.8MB Okay, the SP should be 4100MB. Which of these 10 files has 4100MB? What is the difference beween Win7SP1 and Windows6.1? I just followed only the link "Windows 7 Service Pack - Download" Thanks --- Cheers Detlef

Okay, all good questions. The first file on the list is the .ISO (DVD image) of the Service Pack, it contains all three versions (IA, x64, x86) and is meant to be burned to a DVD and installed from there. The next six files are the symbol files for the various version and languages. They're used to debug the Service Pack and aren't really required unless you start running into problems and want to try to find the solutions on your own. The last three are the Service Pack itself - three versions for the three different architectures - IA64 for Itanium processors, X64 for 64-bit Windows 7 and x86 for 32-bit Windows 7. Windows 6.1 is Windows 7. 6.1 is the Windows version number while Windows 7 is just a marketing name. If you don't have SP1 installed your Windows is Version 6.1 Build 7600. After SP1 it'll be Version 6.1 Build 7601. From a Command Prompt type in winver and see what it says... Rather confusing isn't it?

In addition to Bob's and leo's answers: The ISO would cover any language, but for the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe make sure to pick your language. If you are forced to download 900 MB (as it was for me) you can as well add the 300 MB "check SUR" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 and run it before SP1.

Thanks for your answers. This was what I thouhgt but how can such a stupid message placed on the main web sites for user: Choose the file of your version: x86-basiert (32-Bit): 4100 MB x64-basiert (64-Bit): 7400 MB Follow to Webseite Windows 7 Service Pack 1-Download And then: all files have Win7 in it except the real needed file, where windows is called by its internal name. Okay, the iso file has also not the marketing name like file name. How stupid is this? --- Cheers Detlef
