What exactly does the whole July 1 Windows 7 program mean?
Hi, I've been going crazy trying to find my answer to a question. I did some searching and found that Microsoft will have a program for people who buy computers after July 1 (called Technology Guarantee i think) will be able to get Windows 7 upgrade for free or for a low price. I was recently bought a computer (HP) about 2-3 weeks ago, I was getting a very good price from eBay so decided to buy it. My question is, if I register my computer after July 1 will I be able to get Windows 7 for free or cheap? I have not registered my PC yet. I was in the Windows 7 beta and absolutely loved it and I think its the best windows ever to come out. Will I be able to get it for low price?

tigerx - Actually... Most of what's on the web about that is still speculation. There wasSOME mention of it way back at the begining of the year. But it wasn't anything official. As far as registration goes... I'm not entirely sure if that really matters. If I recall correctly, you're supposed to be getting a coupon in the box along with the usual stuff - manuals, CD/DVDs, warranty cards, etc... that you can redeem (no doubt with the usual accompanying copy of the receipt.) for your copy of Win 7. At least, that was the way it was handled last time around when Vista was about to ship.

That's true, they can't just hand out copies they need some verification. But was that Vista program through Microsoft or lets say HP? As far as I know last time HP offered Vista for free and Dell charged $50. I personally will have no problem if I have to pay up to $100 but if its more than $100 then it would be out of the question and I'm sure a lot of people also think that way. All I can do now is just keep my hopes up for HP to offer an upgrade version. They should at least offer beta testers some kind of discount.

Hi tigerx2This thread is off topic for these forums. There isn't anyone here who can answer your questions with anything besides speculation.Only HP can answer these questions and they will not release any information until the program is implemented. How HP handles the upgrade program is entirely up to them. Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

tigerx - If memory serves me correctly, it was a joint effort between the both Microsoft and the various OEMs. As of right now, we have NO clue as to what the pricing will be like. Stay tuned...
