Last weekend we had a power failure. After that, my antivirus software starting hanging partway through- it seemed always on the same file- a temporary internet file. I first tried deleting my temporary internet files. The problem file was not deleted. It was in Content.IE5 and I am running IE8. I tried using Windows Explorer to go to that directory. When I did, Windows Exploere started using 99% of the CPU (just like the AV software). I managed (after a VERY long time) to "delete" the file. This put the file in the recycle bin. So now, if I try to open the recycle bin, that process uses all the CPU and basically hangs the machine. Likewise, the AV software now hangs on a file in the recycle bin. I then tried running chkdsk c: \r from the recovery console. It said that it found and fixed errors, but when I boot back into Windows, I have the same problem with the anti-virus software and the recycle bin. Either application locks everything up. From the DOS prompt of the recovery console, I can see what I think is the file (oddly it was created 10/20/08 and caused no problems until now). I'm a bit hesitant to delete it. I'm worried it has some strange links that might delete more than just the file. Any advice on this?I've also run a surface scan of the hard disk and it came back indicating no problems.As an aside, this is now the second PC where I've had files that locked up applications. On the other chkdsk failed to complete. It got to a point where it said it was moving a file over and over and over (for hours). But when I gave up and hard-powered down the machine, at least the antivirus was working again, I still have problems with IE (IE6 on that machine) or explorer.exe itself going to 100% CPU and freezing up the machine. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't some other funky file, but in that case, I don't know the filename.1 person needs an answerI do too
