What FREE Antivirus works on Windows 7 RC?
What FREE Antivirus works on Windows 7 RC? I've just installed it, and I was using McAfee's Total Protection Beta for Windows 7, but the installation failed and now I can't even get to the site (http://beta.mcafee.com) without a runtime error occuring on the page.Intel Pentium 4 @ 3Ghz, 2GB DDR Ram, Nvidia 7600GS - AGP type.

Hi thebigdintx. I use AVG which is free and works fine on the Windows 7 RC :) The only issue I have with the free version of AVG is that is does not protect against rootkits and it does not protect your IM chats or check your downloads (according to AVG's own product comparison page here....http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition). If you want a reliable and unassuming AV program, download the free version of AntiVir antivirus, here http://www.free-av.com/en/trialpay_download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

Kaspersky's AV also uses its own firewall. Version8.0.0.1081 is a beta for approximately 185 days. Too early for me to guage its firewall, but the av part, as always, is superb.

The web site makes no mention of Win 7, nor does the documentation. Is this ok with Win 7? I should mention that it received a top rating from Consumers Reports. I got McAfee installed and it's working fine now. Maybe their server for it was overloaded May 5th when RC was released. I also tried installing it without going through using their Virtual Technician first as is recommended by them during the install process, so maybe that made a difference? It offers total protection, not like AVG Free which doesn't protect IM sessions or downloads. McAfee's beta software license for Windows 7 RC shows it good until December 31st, 2009, so that's good too because it offers a good antivirus solution for me through the end of my testing Windows 7 RC.Intel Pentium 4 @ 3Ghz, 2GB DDR Ram, Nvidia 7600GS - AGP type.

What Grisoft with AVG 8.0 and now the latest 8.5 build was to incorporate an updated form of Ewido into those two builds as well as the IE security toolbar option. Grisoft used to have a separate antirootkit tool you downloaded separately until buying out Ewido and adding that type of protection in along with antiadware/antispyware. The initial scan of the 8.0 build on the 7000 32bit beta saw Windows lock solid at first. Since that time the 8.0 and now the 8.5 have running quite on both 32bit and 64bit RC editions.

Starcruiser, I'm in the exact same boat. I'm running the 32-bit version of 7100 and I've tried both version 325 (which I believe is most current) and then 323 which I had to look for. Both of these state that there are files missing in order for it to perform as needed. What is the fix for this that still allows me to use AVG 8.5?

I use AVG and it's fine so far. I wouldn't recommend Symantec as I stopped using them a long time ago when they forced me to lower my security to install and configiure by implementing windows scripting.

PC Tools Antivirus is one of the better antivirus programs. It has a free addition that you can download. Hello all; I installed RC 7 a few days ago and love it so far! After setting it up, Win 7 provided a link to several Anti-Virus programs that are working with the Win 7 - I chose F-Secure, Technology Preview 2009 and found that it installed flawlessly and isn't the pain in the neck that others have proven to be. I'm sure it'll just be free "for now", but that's what my Win 7 is - on my computer "For Now". All said and done, I like it and it's an option!

Not many mentions of PANDA antivirus on this blog, I have tried all of the windows7 recomended antivirus solutions and i think panda has had least problems with instalation and least impact on my pc's performance ( using old hp pavilion dv4225 ) its already blocked a couple of viruses and its spyware defence is pretty good. Top marks to Panda!

You are so right. AVAST has stopped the downlaod of files with a virus BEFORE it gets to my computer. I have it on all of my computers. I have XP, Vista ultimate, and 7 RC on both my laptop and another decktop. I have had no problems.
