Yes, Kamyar, DreamScene has been removed from Windows 7. From a personal view point it was simply a novelty. The actually DreamScene video's weren't all that exciting; in fact StartDock produce far better desktop background videos than Microsoft have ever used - StartDock's aquarium is very calming after a stressful day:-)John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

Ultimate Extras were never that attractive to customers. A shame, but true. Microsoft didn't put too much effort either to be honest in this feature. So no surprise at all for me that they are removing the "extras".Regards.W7 Beta running on an AMD Semprom 3200+ (1800Mhz) with 2 Gbs of RAM and a built-in Nvidia 6100 VGA, and mate, it runs like a charm! And now on my VAIO FE31M Laptop.

For the price, no, they were not attractive. They were good if you discount that or got a free copy of Ultimate (which I didn't). Sound Schemes (Home Premium), Desktop Slideshow (Home Premium), MUI language packs (Ultimate), EFS (Business)andBit Locker (Ultimate)were all moved to 7 and some enhanced. In truth, most Extras were retained in Windows 7.Hold'em Poker, Tinker, and the video component of Dream Scenes are the only extras that have been removed. I'm sure all three were licensed with other companies which would be part of the reason why they were removed. Video Dream Scenes were known for memory leaks, performance drains and the occasional crash. I'm surprised they decided to remove it but then again, I'm not. Not to mention Dream Scenes were hard to create. Most of the Microsoft-madevideos look amateurish and the videos on the internet absolutely abysmal. Personally, I wanted Dream Scenes in 7 and I'm not too happy they've been removed, but I understand why./sheds a tear for Dream Scenes

Actually Vistaline 'amateurish' is my opinion of the windows 7 startup logo; perhaps that part of the project is on a 'low budget' and they couldn't get Steven Spielberg to help them out. Either way IMHO it has ruined the front end of Windows 7.As I said DreamScene was a bit of a novelty, it certainly wasn't worth paying extra for. Personally Microsoft could have easily adapted it for inclusion in all versions of Vista, but Microsoft chose not to.While DreamScene was fun a lot of users, after the initial 'playing around with DreamScene' period had elapsed started asking themselves 'but when am i going to get to actually see this DreamScene in action?' Okay when you first boot your machine (which actually took longer with DreamScene enabled) you had a rapid flowing stream or something similar and it looked good (well as good as the Microsoft film crew could make it); however, thirty or so seconds after the PC had booted DreamScene was totally forgotten. Why? Because other opened applications obscured the view. DreamScene was there beavering away in the background using precious resources, basically slowing down the PC, and all the user was interested in was attending to his daily work. After all, if he/she happened to be 'at work' then that is exatly what they were being paid to do, Work, not watch Microsoft DreamScene! If you are at home then, of course, things are different, but there was nothing in DreamScene to really put you in the 'mood' StarDock, on the other hand, put more effort into their designs and, combining them with sound, really make you feel as if you are there. I quotes the 'aquarium' in my last post. If StarDock had simply 'filmed' a fish tank then that would have been no different to what Microsoft have done with their DreamScenes (with the exception that StartDock's scenes are far supeior). Adding realistic sound made all the difference with StarDock, as it would have with DreamScene. Yes the flowing stream was good but how much better would it have been with the actual sound of the rushing water. All these 'gimmicks' are fine provding they are well researched and do what they are supposed to do and, more importantly, are realistic. Without the realism the project is sunk.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

John,Do the stardock backgrounds work in W7 ?
March 24th, 2009 3:35am

SandmanXX,To be honest I couldn't say, simply because I haven't tried them. As Windows 7 is based on the Vista kernal I would assume that they would work (obviously by the time Windows 7 RTM's StartDock will have made sure they work). If i've got time over the next few days i'll install deskscapes and see if it works. Obviously, if anyone else has tried it, no doubt they will give an opinion as to whether it works or not.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

Thanks Kamyar that's interesting to know. It maybe that the relevant drivers are not yet available for Windows 7John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

SandmanXXWhile I have been able to install Stardock deskscapes onto Windows 7 that is about as far asd I have got. None of the 'dream' scenes actually work because the Windows Desktop Manager isn't running. I've visited the StarDock forums and apparently StarDock are not supporting the beta version of Windows 7. As soon as Windows 7 RTM's then StarDock will make the necessary adjsutments for their applications to work. So, for the moment, it looks like the answer to your question SandmanXX is No StarDock will not work (correctly at any rate) on Window7John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

Kaymar,I have managed to install StarDock DeskScapes but it will not run correctly. See my reply to SandmanXX. Apaprently someone on the Stardock forums did suggest a solution but it involves using a pirated copy - something I am not prepared to contemplate.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org
