Western Digital Network Drive can't Access a Win 7 Shared Disk Drive for Backup
Below is a dialogue with Western Digital support about a problem I am having. You will notice that they did not solve my problem, but referred me to Microsoft. I checked out the "Related Topics" links, but they seem to address the problem of accessing the network drive. My problem is with the network drive accessing shares on a Win 7 computer. I have a MyBookLive (network disk drive) that is attached (ethernet cable) to a Cisco E3000 wireless router. I want to create safepoints (backup of the network drive) to a portable USB disk drive that has been shared (full access for Everyone). When the USB drive is connected to a computer with XP, it can be created. When the USB drive is connected to a computer with Windows 7, it can not be created. Running the Dashboard (a web interface to the network drive) on the Win 7 computer, after Create/Discover, the network map shows the MyBookLive, the router, the Win 7 computer and the XP computer. When I click on the XP computer, I get a list of shared devices, most with the padlock and one shared folder without a padlock. I can create a later safepoint to that folder on the hard disk of that computer. When I click on the Win 7 computer, from which I am connected to the Dashboard, I am prompted for username and password in a "Device Access" window. When I type in the username and password of an Administrative account on the Win 7 computer, and confirm it appears to be accepted, but I don't get a list of attached shared devices. If I click on the same icon, I am back at the same prompt. If I enter computer_name\username and password, I get the same response. I have all network devices "Full Trust" in Norton 360. Turning off Norton Firewall doesn't help. Any suggestions? I can also create a safepoint on the 500GB removable USB drive if I connect it to the XP computer. It seems that for some reason, the WD drive computer cannot get past some security layer on the Win 7 computer. Dear Clarence, Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Rodriguez J. I apologize for the inconvenience that this unit is giving you at this time. This is something that's strictly a permissions issue of some sort on Windows, as you noted on your previous email, not a particular issue with the My Book Live. The unit is able to see the Windows 7 and the Windows XP and even back up into the Windows XP and a portable drive attached to it, but something is blocking it from being able to access the Windows 7 and create a Safepoint there. My suggestion would be to contact Microsoft about this issue, for it being a permission issue with Windows it is something that we do not have a resolution for. Quick tips I could give you are to Power Cycle your Win 7 computer, and to run all windows Updates that are available, even Optional Updates. If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further. Sincerely, Rodriguez J Western Digital Service and Support

It seems to me that your network based HD is using an older authentication version of NTLM. Go to Local Computer Group Policy and see if you can set it for a lower (older) authentication version.
