Weirdest Windows Update Error
Hi everyone, first of all, thanks for looking into my problem.Okay, this error is so weird that I really don't know how to relate it. But, I will try to explain it succintly.Back in July 2007, I first bought this HP Pavillion 2523tx with Windows Vista Premium 32bit installed. Okay, for the first few months. Everything was running smoothly. Till then, I encountered this Windows Update Error Code 8024402C. Okay, the weird part is here. I have problem updating or even trying to download anything from Microsoft Download site. Meaning I can't download anything from Microsoft such as C++ Express etc. But, when I go to some public site like Starbucks coffee shop where they provide wireless access, I have no problem at all, updating and downloading from Microsoft is perfectly fine. So I thought it might be the router in my home. So I tried with few of my friend's laptops which include Windows XP Home Edition, Professional Editon SP2. All have no problem accessing the update site and downloading site. That's very very odd. I really have no idea how to solve this problem. I screened through many pages of help in google but all to no avail. Which I resorted to posting my problem here. Hope this problem can be solved. Thanks.

Hi, Please perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search box, and click OK. 2. Double-click "Windows Update" in the list and stop the service. 3. Minimize this window. 4. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and click OK. 5. Backup the registry and then delete the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate 6. Go back to the services and start the Windows Update service. 7. Try to do the updates now. Hope it helps.

Dear Joson Zhou, Thank you for your reply. However, much to my dismay, the problem persists. Any idea what is causing this error ? I have no problem updating/accessing Mircosoft Download Site outside. Could it be my router's problem ? But, why is it so my friends' laptops do not show any error. I'm puzzled. Thanks.

Hi, I would like to know what error was received when you tried to download in Microsoft Download Center. Can you download in other third party website? In addition,I suggest toperform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: Reset IE:=================================1) Close any Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.2) Open a new IE window.3) Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.4) Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.5) In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.6) When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the settings, click Close, and then click OK.7) Close Internet Explorer.8) Try to perform a Windows Update and check the result. If the issue persists, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution:=================================1) Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window:net stop wuauservnet stop Cryptsvcren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SD.oldnet start wuauservnet start Cryptsvc2) After pasting the above commands, close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location.3) Refer to the Desktop, right click the register.bat file, and choose Run as administrator.4) After that, please perform a Windows Update again and check if the issue resolved. Hope it helps.

Hi Joson, I emailed the windows support team. And they asked me to set so that my network will obtain DNS server automatically. Besides that, they asked me to turn off the Windows Firewall. Suprisingly, both problems are solved simultaneously. I can access Windows Update and download from Microsoft Download Site. Before that, whenever I download something from the Microsoft site such as eg. VisualC++ Express, they will show me Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage. But once I set Obtaining DNS automatically in the TCP/IP settings and turning off Windows Firewall, problems solved. What I don't understand is, why I have no problem in other places but my home ? And why is my Window Firewall blocking the Windows Firewall only in my home? How toI set it to allow WindowsUpdate ?Thanks.

Hi, Glad to hear that the issue has been resolved. I agree that the issue is really weird. When you go out to some public sites, the network environment is different, and the DNS server that the Windows Vista machine accesses is different. In my opinion this issue should be related the DNS server.

Ok... this is what I did to fix error code 8024402c...I used parts of both the answers ...click start type in services.msc window opens DNS in the TCP/IP listing all actions. found the line that showed actions disabled, right clicked box opens, changed the setting to automatic, clic apply, click ok, close. went to windows up-date, showed yellow at top recommending I check for updates, completed task, Wiskers said all was uo-to-date ! DID NOT TURN OFF WINDOWS FIREWALL. all is well again. "*)" Kiki
