Weird printer queue issues - going offline

Hi,

We're experiencing very weird issues with print queues going offline.  This usually happens when surface pro goes out of LAN, then gets connected back to either LAN or WiFi.  Sometimes the queues also goes offline while on LAN.

We're running Surface pro 3 with Windows 8.1.

Thanks.

Hi james,

Did you use the network printer or local Printer?

Please use Print Management (printmanagement.msc) to clear unused port.

Run printmanagement.msc -> Print servers -> COMPUTERNAME -> Ports and delete the ports there.

And then check if your Print Spooler service is running fine.

Hi Karen,

It's network printer and it's being installed via group preference.  We are running desktops and laptops on windows 7 and none of the users are experiencing this.  Only users on surface pro with windows 8.1 are.

I also checked print spooler service when the print queue was greyed out and it was running.  However, a restart of the service will bring the print queue back online.

I've never seen this issue before.... weird.

Thanks.

Hi,

Try to disable SNMP on the printer port to see if it could be resolved. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Ports tab.
  4. Click Configure Port.
  5. Click to clear the SNMP Status Enabled check box, click OK, and then click Close.

James,

Please check this:

Right click the Device Manager -> select your network adapter and your printer -> In there Properties dialog box, click the Power Management tab. Make sure Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box is unchecked.

After that, restart your computer to check the result.
