Weird Remote Desktop Connection Issue

So I just got a new desktop, a Windows 8.1. Set it up to use my Microsoft Account credentials just like my old Win 8.1 Pro machine did.  Once I got it setup and going I tried to remote desktop into my Windows 8.1 Pro using my MS credentials and it worked fine, once. After that I got the "credentials did not work message" and it wouldn't connect. I checked permissions and everything on the Pro machine, even turned off firewalls on both machines but it still wouldn't connect.

Finally, I created a local account on the Pro machine and voila it connected (using localaccount/user.  A strange issue, but even stranger after I tried connecting from my iMac using MS Remote desktop connection for Mac.  It connected using my MS Account credentials!

I've looked at some of the remote desktop connection issue threads and none of the solutions suggested seem to work for my issue.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I need to do to fix this?

Hi,

Based on my understanding, you can use your MS credential to remote connect to your Windows 8.1 first, and then you got "credentials did not work message", you cannot remote connect to your Windows 8.1 with MS credential then.

Can you remote Windows 8.1 with the newly created local account?

You said that after you connect from your iMac, it success with your MS credential. Would you please test again with another MS credential?

Hi,

Would you please try it on another Windows 8.1 machine?

In addition, here is a link with the similar error message, please refer to it:

Hello Yan,

Unfortunately I don't have any other Windows 8.1 machines I can try currently (this is just at my home).  I do have a Windows 7 Enterprise laptop for work that I also tried, and it works fine too connecting to the Win 8.1 pro machine using my MS account credentials (more than once).

I have seen this thread you pointed out in your reply, but it isn't the same issue exactly.  They were trying to connect to a local account on the server they were trying to remote to.  This works for me already.

So I just tried connecting to the Windows 8.1 Pro machine with it's IP address rather than it's network name and bang... it works with my MS account credentials that way!  So something to do with the network name is causing an issue with connecting via the MS account credentials...  Really strange.  Anyway, I'm happy I can now remote into that machine using the proper credentials.

It would be nice to know why it doesn't work using the network name (because it works using the network name connecting to a local account on the Win 8.1 pro machine), but since I have a way to get in now, it certainly isn't a high priority for me anymore.

Hi,

It seems like an network related issue, I would like to suggest you add this record in your hosts file and then check the result.

Would you please share the RDC screen here to let us know how did you use the MS account?
