Weird Connection Problems in Vista after Windows 7 Beta
Some time ago I wanted to try out Win 7 so I downloaded it and installed it on a separate HDD (1 HDD with Vista, 1 with Win 7). After I saw all the new things I formatted the Win 7 HDD and just used Win Vista as my normal OS again. But now I got some strange connection problems. Some times my PC says that there is no network connection, some times it says I only got a local connecten and some times it says I got connection with a unknown network and I got limited acces. These problems are totally random, some days I've got very little problems, other days I need to reset my router over and over again to finally get a connection. This problems appeared some times when I was still dual-booting Win 7 and Win Vista, but after I removed the Win 7 beta it only got worse. I've searches all over the internet to find solutions but I couldn't find any that were usefull. I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit. My specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Asus EN8800GT 512MB Kingston 4GB 667 RAM MSI P35 Neo 3 Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit (NL) PS. Sorry if my English is incorrect, I live in Holland...

If your computer is fairly new, you can try the system repair. That might fix your issues. If not, try and see if there are newer drivers for your network hardware. And if all else fails, you may have to do a system restore. I have had a few issues similar to this on the Vista laptops and it is a pain to fix. Anyway, try the repair and see if that fixes your problem. Let me know if I can help more.Heather Watson

Hi, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, the issue may not related to Windows 7 since they are working separately and will not affect each other. Please also try the following to narrow down the issue: 1. Please check if the issue also occurs on other computer on the same network. 2. Bypass the router and connect to the network directly to see how it works. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thanks for the replies!. :) @ Mrs. Watson My PC is from 2007 so not so new anymore. I also tried new drivers for my Realtek network card, but that didn't help either. @ Nicholas Li I've got a other computer downstairs on the same network and that just works fine. And how can I bypass my router? (I know this is IT Pro forum, but I couldn't find the normal one).

Hi, I know there is a router between the Internet Connection (modem) and the problematic computer. If it is possible, please connect the problematic computer directly to the Internet Connection (modem) to see if it works. Meanwhile, you may boot the system to Safe Mode with networking and check how it works. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

I don't know what's with my computer but I don't really got the problem any more. I can just start up my pc and then I got internet. The only thing is that when I put my pc in standby and later on use it again I can't get a connection anymore. It just keeps saying that I got a LAN only connection.

Hi, At this time, please try the following: 1. Update the NIC driver to the latest version if it is available. Note: Please remove the old version first. 2.Disable Save Power function of the NIC: 1) Click Start, right click on Computer and choose Properties. 2) Click Device Manager. 3) Navigate to your NIC, right click on it and choose Properties. 4) Choose Power Management tab. 5) Please uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." 6) Restart the computer and check if it works. Meanwhile, I would like to share the following Knowledge Base with you: The network connectivity status incorrectly appears as "Local only" on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista-based computer that has more than one network adapter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947041 Hope this can be helpful.Nicholas Li - MSFT

I updated it and disable the power saving function. It seems to work, the only thing is that when I put it in standby and use the computer later it first says that it got a unknown connection, after a couple of seconds it says it got a LAN only connection and then I just get a normal connection. But everything works so I think that the problem is solved. :)
