Web Filter not available in Parental Controls
When I go into "Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > Parental Controls" there is a message at the top that says: "Web filtering and activity reporting are not available on this computer. To enable web filtering and activity reporting, you must install additional controls". At the bottom there is a drop down list labeled "Additional controls" but there is nothing in the list.At first I assumed this was a limitation of the Beta, but then I saw on another site (http://www.itechtalk.com/thread1382.html) a screen showing the web filter much the same as Vista had (with no mention of additional controls).I suspect this may have occured on my PC because when I first set it up I joined an existing domain. After I did that it completely disabled access to Parental Controls. I then removed the machine from the domain, but I am wondering if there is some registry setting somewhere that hasn't been reset to properly reactive Parental Controls. Is anyone else seeing this message about needing to install additional controls before you can access web filtering? If it is a hangover from joining the domain, does anyone know where this might be rectified in the registry?

Hey,It's not a hangover from joining the domain, but can you try the following:1. Create a standard user account.2. Log on to your administrator's account, and go to Parental Control3. Click on the starndard user account.4. And configure the Web Filter there. This link is for Windows Vista, but it should be similar. Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org

Thanks for the feedback. That is exactly how I tried to do it before (although the standard user account already existed so I didn't need to create it). I wil try to create a new account and see if it's any different.

I tried it with a new user account and it made no difference. I've put a screen capture here:http://chameleonsupport.com/temp/parentalcontrols.jpg

I just tried a fresh install on another machine, I did not join a domain this time, and the behaviour is exactly the same. So it looks like Windows 7 doesn't have web filtering out of the box. Does anyone else have web filtering available?

Hi, Web filtering and activity report logging got pulled out as a "Windows LIVE" feature for Windows 7. It is available at http://fss.live.com Hope it helps.

This stinks. The Windows Live filter brings back dial up speed memories. It is slow by comparison to the Vista filter. What a shame, I really liked the filter in Vista. Now I'm going to have to shell out money for a third party web filter. Bummer!

Yeah I agree. I tried using it for a couple of months but gave up in the end because it was slow and very tedious to work with. I think I will go back to K9.

yeah.. windows 7 lacks the web filter support in parential control. Because they've replaced it with family safety.. But I think family safety is not as good as the web filtering under parential control. If its won't be in final version. I won't be using family safety. I'll install some third party software for web filter..

Thanks for posting....so far this works for my kids. Can be a pain. Wish Windows 7 would have kept the web filter in the Parental Controls. So Vista was not as bad as some people say.....at least in this situation.
