Web (IE8) stopped working suddenly
(subject). Worked fine, then I shut down (power off) and restarted my cable modem + router. Power back on = web doesn't work in Win7. Works fine if I reboot into XP (like right now) but not in Win7. In the dos prompt I can ping a few sites, but in IE I can't bring up any web pages - not even the router config page (http://192.168.0.1) Any ideas? Where's the "repair" button??

Go to your network center in control panel, click on your connection and diagnose and post what it says.

Also, its been my findings you have to reboot your router twice(it looks like you are using a dlink)

It says "Troubleshooting could not identify the problem... click more for" (blah blah more useless stuff) I can ping sites by name in thedos prompt(so DNS works) it just never works in IE 8. I can alsoplay online games just fine. So,IE8 is broken. Any suggestions? Firefox? How do you re-install IE? Or do I just have to wipe Win7 and re-install?

I did re-boot my router (and cable modem) twice. The 2nd time I waited like 20 minutes after powering each device on..... It works perfectly in XP (like always) just IE8 doesn't work any more in Win7 (x64)

I've had the same problem, but IE8 worked after uninstalling the Virus protection program. So far I am still looking which Virus protection works with W7. Lot's of similar threads in the Application Compatibility section.

I agree, IE* is not the best. but you said you could not get on the web at all with Windows 7. You said only XP would work. These are 2 different problems. I too, use Firefox. I bete tested IE8 and was not impressed, it is not any better now than then. Weather or not Firefox or IE8 are used for browsers does not change the web connection.

Fixed. I went into Internet control panel, advanced, disabled automatic configuration.Don't ask me what happened but that fixed it.

I also gave the PC a static IP (192.168.0.100) instead of letting DHCP do it. Then I turned off automatic config. So, try using a static IP if you can?
