Web-Based Client for Lync 2010

Folks,

I am a bit confused about how to provide web-based access to IM & Presence in Lync 2010.  I am hoping you can help clear up my confusion...

1. Is it true that Lync 2010 only provides a "Group Conference" web client and not a "full" web client such as the one in OCS 2007 R2?

2. Is it also true that in order to provide this functionality, that I need to introduce the "OCS 2007 R2 Web Access Components" into the Lync 2010 environment?

3. If so, does it play well with the "Lync 2010 Group Chat Server"?

4. Also, are there any guideline to adding this OCS into Lync 2010?

Thank you in advance for your gui

---  Thank you.  This is an answer I was pretty much expecting from the Lync 2010 end.  It seems that the trend may even extend into Lync 2013.  However, I have seen posts and heard tell of deploying the "Web Client Role/Components" from OCS 2007 R2 to achieve this functionality.

Can anyone comments on this?

Also...

My goal is to try to provide these features to users without giving access to "Outlook Web Access (OWA)".

Hi Kevin,

you are right, Lync 2010 Web App is only for conferencing it doesn't provide IM and Presence like CWA did on OCS 2007. You can install a CWA 2007 R2 and integrate it with your 2010 pool though, no problem.

Check here for guidelines: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/gg425871(v=ocs.14).aspx

The other option is to integrate it directly with your OWA (2010+) as you may know, but you don't want to deploy that as per your last post.

Group chat needs a dedicated client for 2010.

Hi,there

Here are the answers:

1)Yes.Although there is Lync Web App for Lync conference but it cannot provide IM and presence.

2)Yes.You can introduce  "OCS 2007 R2 Web Access Components" into or integrated with OWA.However,if you have never deployed OCS in your orgnization or unprep the Active Directory for OCS when decommission, you cannot introduce the OCS Web Access components.

3)Introduced OCS web access components cannot not work with Lync Group Chat.

4)Check the link Hugo provided to you .

Sharon

Thank you.  That is great information.

However, it leads me to a another few questions:

1. If OCS 2007 R2 was never installed in this environment, can I update the Schema to OCS 2007 R2 and then immediately update it to Lync 2010?  What would this do to the existing Lync Servers?

2. Are there any "third-party" solutions that can provide the same functionality in the Lync 2010 environment as the OCS Web Client did in OCS?

Thank you in advance.
