Weather Gadget Weirdness
I've got the stock weather gadget that comes with Win 7 on my desktop. For some unknown reason, it seems to think it's 55 degrees outside. But then again, it seems to think it's ALWAYS 55 degrees. Also, when it's high noon, it shows itself as being dark outside. If I enlarge the gadget, it will update to sunshine or dark - depending on what time of day it is. But it always shows 55 degrees. My other weather related gadget sees what I'm guessing is the correct temps - it's now about 77 degrees outside. Switching the location (say, NY City) and back to Los Angeles, does nothing. It still thinks it's 55 degrees. It does change the temp to 64 degrees in NYC, but it always goes back to 55 in L.A. If I close the gadget out entirely and restart it - it defaults to New York and when I switch it back to L.A., it still thinks it's 55 degrees. The Vista version of the same gadget loaded on another hard driveon this machine shows the temp to be 64 in Los Angeles. It's way off, but at least it's a bit warmer than 55 degrees. Not entirely sure if it does any updating as I'm not using that particular OS that much at the moment.Anyone else notice any weirdness with the Weather Gadget?

If it's working for other areas, it almost sounds like it's the data being fed to the gadget for your area, and not the gadget itself. I've had this problem with the weather gadget in ObjectDock and it typically fixes itself anywhere from an hour to a day later.

I kinda figured it might possibly be something like that. But the fact that it sort of works in Vista (on the same hardware), tells me it's not entirely the feed. The thing is - it's been "stuck" at 55 for a week now... You'd think someone would have noticed...

Hi, Please try to register wlsrvc.dll dll file to test the problem. Register wlsrvc.dll file: ============================== 1. Click "Start", type cmd.exe in the Start Search bare. When the cmd.exe file appears in the Programs list, right click it and select "Run as administrator". 2. Please navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar, run the following commands in CMD window. regsvr32 wlsrvc.dll 3. Restart the computer and test the problem again. Does it work? Hope it helps.

Ok... I tried all three steps. Regsvr32 reported that wlsrvc.dll was correctly registered. I rebooted. It still says 55. I changed the locale to New York City - and it showed it was cloudy and 43. I switched back - it says it's clear and (wait for it...) 55 degrees. Now in all fairness, the other weather gizmo I have loaded says it's 53 degrees and partly cloudy. I'll let this run all night and into daylight hours to see if it updates and get back to you in the evening...

Got the same result here, so don't modify your computer to find a solution. I don't think the gadget is at fault here (it does work alright for other areas), but the data being fed to the gadget may be wrongly formatted.RegardsRem

In a word - no... It didn't fix anything. <sigh> It did not change to daylight mode (with the sunny look), nor did it have a cloud in front of the sun (it rained here a bit today).

Hi Wolfie2k6, I involved a program manager on this issue. We need more information about your scenario. Thank you for your cooperation. 1. Your locale. (Present in the format tab of Regional and languages settings in Control Panel) 2. Your location. 3. Do you use Windows 7 beta version? If not, could you please let me know which build you are using? Thanks.

No problem... and Thanks in advance!1.) Locale seems to be missing from the Format tab of the Region and Language Options control panel item. It DOES have Format and that is set to English (United States). 2.) Los Angeles, CA zip 900413.) Windows 7 Beta build 7000. With all Windows Update items downloaded and installed - except for one Nvidia video driver that refused to install. I installed the Nvidia beta drivers I downloaded from their site instead.

Robinson - As promised, here's the complete saga...At about the time I posted previously, I got the first picture found here. Note - nothing really seems amiss, the difference between the two gadgets is minimal - 2 degrees. No biggie.A few minutes later, I expanded the Windows gadget and got this. Note - nothing really strange here either. Now, after a few hours of sleep, I got up and took this. Note - it's the middle of the day - 12:20 PM. The weather gadget is showing it's still the middle of the night, that it'sCLEARand that it's 55 degrees. Note the other gadget shows a prediction for thunderstorms, and 58 degrees.Expanding the Windows gadget, on the other hand, makes it look at the clock, apparently as seen here. Note that it now shows that the sun is shining when the other gadget clearly (and a quick look outside) shows that it's clearly NOT!So if I change the location the gadget is supposed to be reporting for to New York - the default, note that it's showing something quite different. A quick check of Weather.com shows it's close enough - cloudy and 58.. So it DOES seem to be getting some telemetry.Lastly, changing back to Los Angeles, CA, it once again shows it's sunny and 55 degrees - even if it's not.

Just as a point of curiosity... I left the weather gadget set to New York City for the last 24 odd hours and it seems to be updating properly. It's shown a storm that rolled through NYC the other day, as well as the fact that it's now clear and aquite chilly (46 degrees F) in the big apple.

Hi Wolfie2k6, Please help us confirm the following points: 1. Please check the temperature shown at http://weather.msn.com/local.aspx?&wealocations=wc%3aUSCA0638&q=Los+Angeles%2c+CA&setunit=F also when checking weather from the gadget. Does the gadget shows some weather but the above URL shows a different weather? 2. If the answer is YES, please zipped the following folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Cache and send it to me. Please upload the file to https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=37216848-1b46-493d-b9ba-7005e4491a3e Password: d0%IV$gL5# Thanks.

Yes, the weather shown on the link (current time 4:30 am) shows 57 degrees, while the gadget shows 55. AH HA! I think we're onto something with the cache... There are two folders in the above location - one is for Global Currency, the other (I'm guessing) is for the weather. Inside the weather folder, there are three files - one is datedJuly 2nd, 2009 and the other is dated April 13th, 2009. The third file is called "GlobalCacheCleanup.xml" The WeatherCache.ZIP file has been uploaded to the link above. Deleting the two numbered XML files, by the by worked. There are now two files - both dated April 14th, 2009 (one is for NY and the other is for CA, apparently) and most importantly, the gadget seems to to have correctly updated as it's now showing 57 degrees (same as the web page.). So, it would be safe to conclude that if the XML files in the cache folder are dated at some future date/time, the gadget will NOT update itself properly - at least, until the date/time catches up with the time stamp of the file. I now know how and where the problem came about as well. On another thread, there was some question as to the expiration date of build 7000. Someone mentioned using WinVer, to which I told them there was a bug in WinVer. Someone challenged me to jump ahead and see if July 1st was indeed the cutoff - which is why I jumped forward to July 2nd. The Weather gadget must have then updated itself and got stuck. It might be a good idea to put in a few lines of code to check the date of the cache file to make sure it isn't stuck in some future time frame. I've seen motherboards with clocks that go wonky do all manner of weird stuff - like jump back to 1999 and then fast forward towards the current time and such. Thanks for the help!

Glad to hear the problem was resolved.

Hello everyone! I've tried several possibilities to fix this problem with the Weather Gadget, but it just doesn't seem to work. Reinstalling gadgets, restoring them, changing location settings and so on - and nothing... What made me raise an eyebrow is the fact that it all supposedly works completely fine when one has Windows installed with everything set to 'United States', as I've read in several threads. I better not go into that story now (...), but I've tried changing those settings as well and that didn't work either. It's weird because it's been working normally for months and all of a sudden it's gone berserk. Too bad none of these tips work in my case, but I sure do appreciate the effort. I'll keep looking for some possible solutions and hope it'll get fixed. Greetings from non-US! ;)

If someone's looking to fix issues with the Weather Gadget in Windows 7, I hope this helps you... Sooo, I finally got it figured out - at least the thing that's helped me. I was beginning to get worried, since everyone else seemed to fix their problem easily, e.g. pressing the x button by the location list didn't work for me at all. Even when I'd try to enter a location, I'd have to type two letters for the text to get recognized at all. Only then would I be able to select and delete the 'Search for location' text and type my own location - although not being able to click the Search button or anything. I was really getting super frustrated by that time - as someone pointed out (on one of the dozens of forums I've checked), it's the small things that drive us wild, so I just couldn't let it go. I've tried several other gadgets, but they didn't work either. I thought it had something to do with the Language and Location settings, but that wasn't it. It wasn't the Work Offline option on Internet Explorer either. It just didn't seem to work whatever I did... Not to prolong my rant, here goes! Note that, naturally, I can't guarantee this will work for everyone, so please read the whole thing (and eventual posts after this one) before proceeding! Seems that my mshtml.dll file was corrupt and needed to be dealt with. You have to be authorized to delete the file, but unfortunately I can't remember how to do that exactly. I guess you can google it or someone can maybe find a good explanation. I remember searching mshtml.dll from the Start menu; right-clicking it and changing the Security options so that the User (whichever name you've got there) has got the Full Control option checked which will enable you to delete the corrupted mshtml.dll file. I'm sorry, I don't really remember how exactly I did it - I just ran into a link from a forum that explained how to change the permissions. Hope you find it easily and you're able to delete the file without much trouble. Now, from what I've read, it's not such of a big problem to get the mshtml.dll file back. What you have to do is to enter sfc /scannow in the Run window, which will scan the whole system and restore the (deleted and) missing mshtml.dll file. I guess you should restart in between these steps (even if not prompted) - at least that's what I did. The corrupted file was replaced by a working one and my Gadgets seem to be working just fine now. ;) Phew!
