Warning Security Essentials is Turned off each time I start
Each time I start my Windows XP PC, I get the balloon warning that Microsoft Security Essentials is turned off and my PC is at risk. There's no easy way to turn Security Essentials ON, I have to follow a series of links and do some downloads to fix the problem, which is back the next day. I tried setting up the PC to automatically download the security updates once a week but that hasn't helped either.I need to either find an easy way to turn Security Essentials ON each time I start up, or cause the automatic downloads to keep it from automatically turning itself OFF.What you have already tried to fix the problem 2 people need an answerI do too

i G RAM Windows XP SP3 Home (also have another machine - similar circumstances with this problem running a PRO copy XP SP3)Dell Inspiron B 120 (other machine is a 4 Gig Ram Gateway)Formerly installed AVG and prior to that, Zone Alarm. Currently both have uninstalled using the uninstall listed with the actual product. Neither shows in the list in the control panel of "Add Remove Programs" Windows Security Essentials is the ONLY installed AV. Exactly as the user describes above, on boot up, a balloon shows up that says Microsoft Security Essentials is not installed. Once a boot up routine completes (and it is slow because there is a check going on to see why MSA is not "ON", the MSA turns on. Seems to be a bug but I would not presuppose that the ZoneAlarm is not buried somewhere in the registry (or the AVG for that matter).Expected answer: (not try another forum as this is the one that comes up at the top of the Google search for "click the balloon") Here is a way to check to see if another antivirus is still hiding on your machine somewhere... or here is the link to where you can check to see if something else is here.frankly speaking Zone Labs has a hive under HKLM\Software\Microsoft as dows ZoneAlarm... similarly AVG Free 8.5 has a hive as does AVG Free 9.0. Neither contains information beyond an empty REG_SZ default value and an Order entry (reg binary - assumed to be some kind of private key).My question is... if these AV's show as uninstalled in the Add Remove Programs, then why does the Hive information still exist in the registry and why does MSA not start up at start up. Services are set for Automatic start up (not a delayed start up - which is probably a windows vista or Win 7 feature, not Windows XP) There is however, a link for the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner... and as with any older machine, tons of crappy applications that keep the machine from being a playground of purity for those who want to find answers in the realm of chaos.I was under the impression that Windows Live OneCare was deprecated. Perhaps this is the problem?Am approaching this problem as though the Windows Live OneCare is the issue and will start by uninstalling this. Will report back after a few days if this seems to fix the problem.

If so, there might still be remnants on your computer that could interfere with Microsoft Security Essentials. You should download and run the appropriate removal tool from www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools.Similar considerations apply to Zone Alarm but unfortunately, I haven't been able to identify a removal tool. Google Uninstall Zone Alarm for guidance.
