WPAD works great on IE6 but not for https on IE 8.
Hello folks, wonder if anyone can assist. this problems is happening with all my users. Around 400 of them. All my clients browsers have wpad.dat configured as an automatic config script (the second box down in IE Lan settings) - the proxy is listening for wpad requests on port 8080. This has been working fine until I upgraded to IE8 Now what we see happening is that if a user tries to log into a https site - ie hotmail - they must untick the wpad entry, and manually specify proxy in the box below. As soon as I downgrade to IE6 - wpad works like a charm again. Re-install IE8 - bang I need to manually specify the proxy by name again to get logged into various https sites. So Bascially I know for sure that my WPAD config is sound. It has been working for years now. This only affects IE8 clients - on both XP and win 7. I suspect that IE8 may be trying to bypass the proxy altogether - for some reason not reading the wpad entry for https sites. Anybody any ideas at all? Many thanks! Graham.grahamcoffer

Hi Graham, Please try to change the settings in Group Policy to test: 1. Click the Start Button, type "gpedit.msc" (without quotation marks) and click OK. 2. In the "Group Policy" window, check if the following settings are enabled: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Make proxy settings per-machine (rather than per-user) User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Disable caching of Auto-Proxy scripts With the above 2 settings modified, please test if the WPAD settings works in IE8. If the issue persists, you may refer to the following links: Using Automatic Configuration, Automatic Proxy, and Automatic Detection How to disable automatic proxy caching in Internet Explorer WPAD detection in Internet Explorer Regards, Sabrina TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Hi Sabrina thanks very much for the reply. I have modifed group policy with the above changes, and used RSOP to make sure they are being applied correctly, however the problem still occurs. And as soon as I roll back to IE 6 it works fine again. I have a long-term solution as follows - might be interersting for your own info I jsut discovered it yesterday: I have built a new ISA 2006 server and updated it with the latest patches, and when I direct my clients through this, the SSL sites all work fine using IE8. When I direct them through my older ISA 2006 server, it stops working on IE8 but Ie 6 is fine. It is my belief that ISA 2006 must be up to the latest patches to ensure full compatability with Internet Explorer 8. Does that make any sense? cheers! Graham. grahamcoffer

Hi Graham, Thank you for your response. According your description, I think we need to install the latest update patches for ISA 2006 for our issue.
