WPA2-Enterprise/AES/PEAP Wifi connection causing Host Process/Windows Explorer Crashes
System information is at the end of this forum. I am working on solving IT problems with a wireless network on a College Campus. We use the following settings: Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise Encryption Type: AES EAP Type: Protected EAP (PEAP) Connect to these Servers: we use two different servers Trusted Root Certification Authorities: GeoTrust Global CA When setting up the connection on this system, I select and enter the proper Security/Encryption type, however I am not given the option to edit the Protected EAP Properties and therefore windows is unable to trust the Root Authentication Certificate from GeoTrust Global CA as the connection server is not trusted by default in windows. Because of the above, when connecting using automatic settings I receive an error from windows stating windows does not have the proper information to accept Certificate from GeoTrust Global CA. The steps taken in this process are listed below. When attempting to set up the connection manually I receive an error Windows Explorer has Stopped Working Error Description states "explorer.exe: The instruction at 0x734cc061 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program. The steps taken to duplicate this error are listed below as well. In addition we also have a utility that creates the wireless profile, however after the proper settings are configured I then receive an error stating "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed”. After this message is received the system cannot see any wireless connections unless either the system is restarted or the NIC is disabled and enabled via the Device Manager. Steps taken to produce issues: Open Network and Sharing Center Click Set up a Connection or Network Selected "Manually Connect to a Network" Click Next Typed SSID Selected WPA2-Enterprise Selected AES Click Next/Finish Receive Connecting to SSID Receive Error: Windows Explorer has Stopped Working Error Description states "explorer.exe: The instruction at 0x734cc061 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program. Right click on Network Notification in System Tray Click Connect to a Network Select proper SSID Receive Prompt for username/password/Domain Receive Notification stating windows does not have the proper information to accept Certificate from GeoTrust Global CA Click OK Receive notice: Connecting to SSID Receive Error "Host Process for Windows Services has Stopped Working and was closed System Information: Operating System Name: Windows Vista Home Premium Features: Terminal Services in Remote Admin Mode, Media Center Edition, Multiprocessor Free, OEM-Version SKU: Home Basic Premium Edition Activation Status: Activated Auto Activation: Enabled Activation Notification: Enabled Checked Build: No UAC Enabled: Yes PAE Enabled: Yes Boot Device: \Device\HarddiskVolume3 System Device: \Device\HarddiskVolume3 Kernel Version: 6.0.6000.17021 Security: 256 bits Product Name Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Build: Lab 6000.vista_gdr.100218-0019 License Status: Licensed (Windows Operating System - Vista, OEM_SLP channel) Hardware DEP Available: Yes DEP for 32 Bits Applications: Yes DEP for Drivers: Yes DEP Policy: OptIn (only Windows system binaries) Windows Update's version number: 7.4.7600.226 Automatic Updates: Automatic (Recommended) Machine GUID: ac872458-26b3-4a71-af39-8b2c2b0d02c7 Installed Microsoft Fix it 50199 2011-02-04 02:24:03 Installed Microsoft Fix it 50203 2011-02-04 02:25:19 Workgroup: WORKGROUP Language: English (United States) Installation Time: 2007-09-01 08:13:36 Boot Time: 2011-02-03 18:02:56 Up Time: 2 Hours 29 Minutes 33 seconds Number of Open Programs: 2 Security Provider Health Firewall: Good Autoupdate Settings: Poor AntiVirus: Good AntiSpyware: Good Internet Settings: Good User Account Control: Good Service: Good Firewall Windows: Firewall Program: C:\Windows\System32\FirewallAPI.DLL Company: Microsoft Corporation Version: 6.0.6000.16501 GUID: {304CE942-6E39-40D8-943A-B913C40C9CD4} Status: Active AntiVirus Symantec Endpoint Protection Company: Symantec Corporation Version: 11.0.5002.290 GUID: {FB06448E-52B8-493A-90F3-E43226D3305C} Status: Active, Up-To-Date AntiSpyware Symantec Endpoint Protection Company: Symantec Corporation Version: 11.0.5002.290 GUID: {6C85A515-B91D-4D2B-AF18-40984A4A8493} Status: Active, Up-To-Date Windows Defender Company: Microsoft Corporation Version: 1.1.1505.0 GUID: {D68DDC3A-831F-4FAE-9E44-DA132C1ACF46} Status: Inactive System Summary Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Hi, The error message "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" indicate one of the dll file might get corrupt during the process. It may occur due to conflict with your driver and certain application. Please make sure you have the latest Network card driver installed. In case certain third party software trigger conflict with the driver, I suggest prepare clean boot to troubleshoot.
