WOL while Sleeping
I am trying to wake a LAB full of Win 7 x64 Ent computers. They work fine when powered off, but if they are asleep, they wake for about 1-2 minutes, then go back to sleep. If you are at the computer, you can see the computer come on, but only the mouse pointer appears on the screen. After just under 2 minutes, the computers go back to sleep every time. If you press any buttons, it completely wakes and then waits the normal 15 minutes before sleeping again. Does anybody have any ideas on what could be causing this. It seems like a power managment thing, but other than the WOL issue, everything works great. Thank you,Ryan

Hi Ryan, I suspect the problem is, that waking from sleep, Widows is expecting something to do. I.e. that keystroke. I would try to give it something to do. For example, ON WAKE, run a batch file that check various things, or pops up a message to the user. Cheers, Eb

Hi Ryan, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. As I understand that you encounter the following scenario: WOL does not work with sleep mode. Please make sure WOL/Wake on LAN is enabled at driver level for your NIC. This is different for every hardware vendor. Also make sure WOL is enabled in your motherboard’s BIOS. Check all necessary settings for WOL functionality: http://wakeonlan.me/kb/tech/wakeonlan.php This following link maybe helpful to you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Leo, I don't think you understood the problem. The issue is the computer does not stay awake. Something in Windows 7 tells the computer to go back to sleep after just about 2 minutes, if it was sleeping when it was WOL. This is happening with all make and models of hardware. WOL works properly if the computer is turned off. If it is turned on WOL works to wake the computer fine, but Windows 7 is putting the computer back to sleep in less than 2 minutes. XP works fine on the same hardware!Ryan

Hi Ryan, did this issue occur before? Please try to login with Safe Mode with network or Clean Boot to see if the same issue appears. And make sure your pc hardware and the drivers are compatible with Windows 7 or not. You can check it on: Windows 7 Compatibility Center Furthermore, as you said it works well of Windows XP, please try to use Windows XP Mode for test: Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 Also you can try to perform these following steps: 1 Right click “Computer” and choose “Manage” 2 Go to “Device Manager” and find “Network adapters” 3 Right click your network adapter and click “Properties” 4 Select “Power Management” and remove “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” Hope it helps. Adam, This turned out to a Registry setting but I fixed it via Group Policy. The reg setting affects how long the computer stay wake after events like WOL. You should change all of the power plans to be sure. Here is a link to the information that I used to fix the issue. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/171042-sleep-return-timeout-unattended-wake-up.html WOL can also be picky about the NIC driver, so you may have to update it also, if you have problems. Good Luck! RyanRyan

Ryan, Did you ever find a solution to this? I am having exactly the same problem with Windows 7. Thanks, Adam.

Hi Adam, I am having exactly the same problem on Windows XP. During unattended wakeup the machine goes back to sleep after ~2 minutes. Is there any registry key value pair that shall be modified? Do you know how it shall be solved in XP SP3? The article for Vista describes the registry path for Vista, which is not applicable for XP. Thanks, Volodya

I dig the internet the whole evening and the answer to this would be this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810719/en-us It seems that is not a bug but a feature of Windows XP. The solutions is the following: there are tools like WakeUp 1.06 which can prevent PC from going into standby. Cheers, Volodya
