WMP 12 CPU usage bug

I have WMP 12.0.9600.17031, which has a weird bug.

With the "Length" column enabled in the Music folder, WMP occupies a whole CPU core; when I close the window the process wmplayer.exe remains running for ~3 minutes before terminating.

Windows Explorer also seems to be suffering: the Music folder is constantly refreshing, making the window flicker, and any right-click menus disappear.

Disabling this column eliminates all of these bugs, and no other columns have this problem.

WHY?????!!!!!!

My specs:

  • Intel Core(TM) i7-4510U @ 2.00 - 3.10 GHz
  • 8GB DDR3
  • 1TB HDD @ 5400 rpm + 8GB SSD cache
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 840M
  • Windows 8.1 64-bit (Standard)
  • Antivirus: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8
  • Latest MRT definitions

I have tried running antivirus scans, MRT, SFC /scannow, defrag etc.

Thanks.

Hi MrDailyBlah

Windows media player 12 needs to check your library for any changes, from tags and album art to directory paths, filename changes, removed/added files etc. it takes few minutes to update if you have large size of library.

If you enable the "Length" or more column, it takes more time to load these information for every media file.

To manager your library

Organize->Manage libraries

Try remove some update libraries from list for good measure.
