WMC 7 Crashes
If you installed Windows 7 SP1 without error, then this means most of your system files are working fine. Try to play/record any show with other players, such as VLC Player, or any other 3rd party softwares. You can check this link to know what often causes Windows to go to Black Screen http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2431700"Everything we do is dictated by motive."

I have two big problems with WMC 7 (still does it with SP1) crashing. 1. My computer crashes with a black screen every couple of days. It seems to occur after recording programs. It just hangs and never goes to sleep or records any more shows. 2. Less often while watching a show, the video will go dim white or pink with a loud buzzing sound and the computer locks up. I was hoping SP1 would fix this but no joy. My system: Abit IP-35E mobo, Q8200 cpu, 2 GB Corsair CM2X Ram (tested with memtest), EVGA GT260 gpu (latest drivers) Can anyone tell me how to fix this or find out what's wrong?

I disabled the “Desktop Window Manager Session Manager” service as suggested in your cite, but the problem still recurred. It seems this is not the same Black Screen crash which occurs after login. This happens either after WMC records a show, or when it wakes up to record a new show. Not sure which. This same computer can usually go a week recording shows without a crash under Vista MC, so it is unlikely to be a hardware problem.

Of course I have all the latest drivers installed. That is the first thing I check. It crashed again today while waking to record a new program. It rebooted at 7:55 and went back to sleep without recording the scheduled programs. :(
