WIndows 7 will not autostart to wireless
I have just re-installed Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit along with all updates including sp1. I have a NetGear 6300 router. The router is working properly and I have a laptop connecting to it wirelessly. I can connect to it from my problem deskto via hard wire. Every time I reboot, I have no wireless connection. I have to in one way or another manually connect and re-enter the security password. Then everthing is fine until I reboot. In Services, the properties for WLan Autoconfig are Started Automatic and Logonas is Local System I have turned off the Windows firewall, so that is not the problem. Ive googled and forumed. One really messed up thing and I ended up having to reset the router, adapter and about everything just to get back to this state. That was a go navigate down to a directory to an Interface directory and delete everything... dont do that.. what a mess. Being smart..right. i just renamed it so I cold put it back... THat didnt help, was still messed up. Since most of those posts are not recent, its time for a new thread. I have windows 8 beta on the laptop and it works fine. Maybe its time to just put the beta on the desktop too :-)

Hi, I suggest you check the following: 1. Ensure that you created the Wireless Network Profile and select the Start this connection automatically check box. 2. Make sure that the WLAN service is set as Automatic and started. 3. Update your wireless network card driver to the latest version. 4. Disable IPv6 on the wireless adapter to check the result. Hope this helps Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

I at least think that I have done everything that you have suggested. The only windows updates remaining are the languages extensions. And I have reloaded the drivers for the wireless card. Im using EDUP which I think is a Cisco thing. I have the disk and have installed from that. I checked the internet for a more recent driver, but the newest that I find is 2010, which seems to be the one that I have. The Router install is performed by an app from NetGear and I have redone that. It works correctly and my windows 8 on the laptop works just fine. It is my main desktop where I am having problems with windows 7 when it attempts to connect on startup wirelessly. As I said, the connection is set to autostart for WLan. That I checked in windows services. I disabled IPv6 and rebooted. No difference, so i turned it back on. This was done in Network and internet / change adapter settings .. select the wireless connection .. right click and select properties. To me, it seems that this security password is not being stored, perhaps in the registry, although really dont know how the networking works. In networkand sharing center, I click the wireless icon, it attempts to fix it, then asks for the password. I enter it and every thing is good..until the next reboot. Thank both of you for the replys, but so far, I have not gotten it fixed. One more note, I thought that maybe I would just delete the connection and recreate it. I dont seem to be able to do that. I should be able to disable the connection, then delete it. However, the delete button remains disabled. A day or so ago, i had this. I had a connection that I renamed to broken connection. Then in the registry, I did a search for broken connection. I found and deleted it in two places. Then went back to the Change adapter settings. I made a new broken connection, which then I could delete. Dont know whats going on with that, but it was the only way to get rid of it. Since this connection seems to be the same, maybe I need to zap it again and recreate it. I did that once right after I did the broken connection. So it didnt seem to help. I mentioned that, in case its a clue to someone.

This looked promising, but no. Initially, this directory was empty. I had connected via wire to the router. So, a quick disconnect, and a manual start of the wireless. My problem is not with auto, it is with the security password. Auto is already set. <connectionMode>auto</connectionMode> On a re-boot, the wireless will never connect. I always have to manually do it and enter the security password. After the wireless start, the xml file is there, but the keyType is <keyType>passPhrase</keyType> Ok, I edited the xml, and added my security code, then one more re-boot. Still no wireless. I manually start the wireless again. CHeck the directory and I now have 2 xml files. THe original with my security password and a new one with passPhrase again. So, it appears that this file is generated when you start the wireless and no amount of changing the xml is going to help. Im using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. To me, the question now becomes ..from what is this process retrieving information to build its xml file. One would think the registry. I did some searches there and found nothing helpful, however the password could be stored there encrypted. I am using a NetGear 6300 router. It a new modle so the software should be up to date. And this to me at least appears to be a windows issue. My laptop with windows 8 beta has no problem connecting. Hopefully, this will be a clue for someone who know more than myself about this process.

Vincent, thanks for the additional searches. I had already found the first one and another very similar to it. It did not help. One of them suggested (as I recall) to delete the interfaces directory then reboot. That did not work either. THe second link was to give permissions to the directory/file. Since the file is being created when I actually make a connection, I did not see how that would help, still I did it. I changed permission on every directory below and including to full permissions and of course the file as well, then re-booted. Alas, still no fix. I went to a friends house yesterday. Seems that they had had a similar problem for several days, but it was now cleared up for him. He did not know what had happened to fix it. Apparently it had started soon after a windows 7 update. I have a new windows 7 install and all updates applied. So, somehow I suspect that it may be something in the update that is at the root. But now im off into purely gussing land. On the good side, i can reconnect manually, or plug in the wire to the router and it works. Its just very irritating since I have just bought a new router and was trying to get this to work with the desktop. Still, thanks for the effort. Guess this wont be a problem if I move to windows 8 :-)

Which secure option did you use for your wireless as in Wep, WPA2 etc? And did you happen to create a seperate secure access for guest? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
