WIndows 7 and LLMNR
Hi, I have a problem that im hoping someone could help me with. Setup: Windows 7 client joined to 2008 domain. Domain namn is domain.local (domain namn actually ends with .local) DNS is set up on the Active directory servers. Problem: Resolution of the domain namn (domain.local) is slow, takes about 2-3 seconds to resolve. The resolution is only slow when using for example ping, if i do nslookup the resolution is fast. If i ping host.domain.local the resolution is fast, problem only occurs with "domain.local". This slow resolution causes some domain logins to fail because of timeout. Troubleshooting: So i did some tests trying to find out what the difference was between pinging "host.domain.local"(fast) and "domain.local"(slow). Using wireshark i saw that when i ping host.domain.local i see that my client sends a request to my DNS server as i would expect. However when i ping domain.local i do not see any traffic going to my DNS servers. Instead i see that the client is trying to use mDNS(multicast DNS)/ LLMNR to resolve domain.local and this seems to be causing the delay in the resolution. So i tried disabling LLMNR in GPO, i doublechecked so that the change had reached the client with gpresult. Then i tried to ping domain.local again and got the exact same result, i check with wireshark and its still sending mDNS requests. Found this article: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/pl-PL/winserverNIS/thread/4da790f5-b453-4c1d-9ba7-d5b5c60df7a8 It states that if the domain name ends up with .local the dns client is supposed to use mDNS(LLMNR). Can someone explain these problems to me and how can i disable this behavior?

Hi, Did this issue occurs with all Windows 7 client PC? I understand that your issue is slow resolution of domain name from DNS. I suggest to perform these tests to troubleshoot the issue: 1 Start Windows 7 with Clean Boot 2 Register DNS via command: ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns 3 Disable IPv6 If the issue persists, it’s possible that the domain.local records are not in DNS. Manually add a record for domain.local in DNS and see if it changed.
