WIndow 7 Mapped Drives
Hello All, We are using Windows 7 Enterprise and we are mapping networked drives through group policy on Windows Server 2008 Standard. The drives map just fine. The issue we have is that the drives time out and can take up to five minutes to reconnect. This reconnection process should be almost instantaneous. Our old office setup was Windows XP and Server 2003 Standard and we never had any issue with the mapped drives reconnecting. I have tried just about everything on Google to no avail. I have been able to prolong the timeout process but once the drives timeout they take forever to reconnect. It would be faster to disconnect all of the drive and reconnect them than to wait for them to auto-connect. All operating systems are 64 bit. Any and all ideas would be appreciated. Best regards, Shannon

Hi Shannon, In the GPO for mapping the drives are the path defined with IP addresses or hostname to the file storage area/Server. If hostname is used, try changing to IP addresses and see if it makes any differens. If it does it could be something with the nameresolution or dns? Good luck. /GWith best regards Gorgis

Thanks Gorgis. I will give that a try today and report back what I find.

Gorgis, I changed the batch file to map the drives using the server IP instead of the DNS name and that seems to have solved the issue. I have checked DNS and everything seems to be setup correctly. The server has entries in the forward and reverse look-up zones and I can ping the server either by the IP or DNS name. Any ideas why the server DNS name would not work for the mapped drives? I can access the drives via Explorer using the DNS name in the UNC path. Best regards, Shannon

Hi are you using hostname only or the FQDN. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fully_qualified_domain_name somehost.example.com With best regards Gorgis

Host name only.

Then you could try to replace the hostname or currently the IP adress with the FQDN and see if that works. But if you are ok with the IP adress.. you are ok. Good luck. With best regards Gorgis
