WINS MMC Console
How do I install the WINS MMC Console in the Remote Server Administrative Tools. It does not exist on my Windows 7 box, but does on my 2008 R2 Domain Controllers.

Hello Reuvy, RSAT Client is available to all customers as part of the supplemental Microsoft Software License Terms to Windows 7 licenses. It seems that there is no WINS MMC Console in the Remote Server Administrative Tools. This is the list of Windows Server 2008 administration tools which are included in Win7 RSAT Client: Server Administration Tools:Server Manager Role Administration Tools:Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) ToolsActive Directory Domain Services (AD DS) ToolsActive Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) ToolsDHCP Server ToolsDNS Server ToolsFile Services ToolsHyper-V ToolsTerminal Services Tools Feature Administration Tools:BitLocker Password Recovery ViewerFailover Clustering ToolsGroup Policy Management ToolsNetwork Load Balancing ToolsSMTP Server ToolsStorage Explorer ToolsStorage Manager for SANs ToolsWindows System Resource Manager Tools For more information about this subject, you might refer to the following KB article. XP Mode, then Adminpak.msi? "Reuvy" wrote in message news:2972f13c-1dec-489 -285aa3c09473...I already knew it wasn't available. The problem is we still have servers which are running WINS. I was asking if there was a way to manage them without having to RDP.

This answers my question:http://blogs.technet.com/askds/archive/2008/03/25/remote-server-administration-tools-released-for-windows-vista-sp1-hurray.aspx Played around with this a bit and figured out some steps to get a WINS snap-in functional on Vista (x86 version) for me. First you'll need to gather up some files. From a Windows Server 2008 X86 install with the WINS Server Tools, Administration Tools Feature installed you'll need the following files: winsmgmt.msc and winssnap.dll.mui. From a Windows XP X86 system with the Windows 2003 R2 AdminPack Tools installed you will need WINSSNAP.DLL (the one from 2008 will not work). On your Vista management station in %systemroot%\system32, place: 1) a copy of winsmgmt.msc 2) WINSSNAP.DLL In %systemroot%\system32\en-US, place: 1) a copy of winsmgmt.msc 2) winssnap.dll.mui Register WINSSNAP.dll using regsvr32 (must be run from an elevated command prompt) Create your shortcut to the snap-in (or copy from another system, making sure that you call the msc using the /s switch (%SystemRoot%\system32\winsmgmt.msc /s). All I can claim is that this worked for me. If your Vista install is X64, then chances are you'd need to source the needed files from X64 2008 and X64 XP. The msc and mui file in the en-US directory might not even be necessary, but I was using the way things were setup in 2008 as my guide, so I included them.

Hi, I followed the exact steps for my windows 7 x64 machine (getting dlls from x64server 2008R2 and x64 server 2003) but it keeps giving the error:"the module winssnap.dll loaded but the entry point DllRegisterService was not found." any help? thanks. Okan

This may sound silly - but could be it doens't work with the (newer) x64 Dlls - did you try coying over the x32 Dlls?

Hmm. I guess not. I use x64 dlls. But I also tried that to "regsvr32 winssnap.dll" on server 2008 R2 x64, it gives the same error and doesn't load the dll. When we install wins as a feature pack, wins snapin is working. Maybe regsvr32 is not the correct way. There must be another way. How do server 2008 R2 register the dlls? I use process monitor to track the processes and operations, I track the dlls, it copies dlls under the system32 folder, and it seems nothing more. Of course there are plenty of processes that I could not understand. still working on it and I think it is possible to install dlls on win7. thanks for any help. Okan

I'm using Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit and I noticed that there is no WINS console in the admin tools menu. I just copied Winssnap.dll and winsmgmt.msc to the system32 folder and ran Regsvr32 winssnap.dll from an elevated command prompt and it works. I copied the files from a Windows 2003 Standard server, not R2.V/r Wayne Hetrich MCITP, Security+

This works for Win7 64 bit as well. I copied the winssnap.dll and winsmgmt.msc from a 2003 x86 machine to Win 7 64bit, ran regsvr32 and voila! It works!

Hi avallk, i also copied the winssnap.dll and winsmgmt.msc from a 2003 x86 machine to c:\windows\system32 on a Win7 Prof. 64bit and ran regsvr in an evaluated command prompt, but no success. The registration of the winssnap.dll always fails. Can you tell me, the version of your winssnap.dll and winsmgmt.msc . thanks Eugen

Hi Eugen, My winssnap.dll is 5.2.3790.3959. And winsmgmt.msc doesn't have a version, but is dated 3/25/2003.

Hi avallk, i know it is late, but thank you very much for your answer. Now i have the solution for the problem. After copying the two files into the %windir%\syswow64 directory and regsvr32 the winssnap.dll from this directory with an elevated command prompt everything works fine on a x64 Windows 7. Thanks a lot. Eugen

I followed the exact steps for my windows 7 x64 machine (getting dlls from x64server 2008R2 and x64 server 2003) but it keeps giving the error:"the module winssnap.dll loaded but the entry point DllRegisterService was not found." This is a problem for me too. My Workstation is Windows 7 SP1 x64. All of my DCs are Windows 2008 R2 x64. I have tried both versions of the regsvr command: %systemroot%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe WINSSNAP.DLL %systemroot%\System32\regsvr32.exe WINSSNAP.DLL I have tried putting the files in both the folders: %systemroot%\SysWoW64 %systemroot%\System32 Still getting the same error. What did you do to make this work???

This doesn't work on windows 7 x64 with sp1, not even using files from server 2008 r2. I will try server 2008 r2 sp1 tomorrow but i am not expecting much.
