Hi MANFRED S,1. Did you make any changes prior to the issue?2. When exactly do you get this error message? This error might have been triggered by an error in another program or component of Windows.Try the following steps and check the result.Step 1: Run sfc (system file checker) scan to see if any system file is missing or corrupt. To do this, try these steps:a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd and click ok.b. On the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.Note: You will be prompted to insert the Windows XP disc if any file is missing. For more information, see Description of Windows XP System File Checker (Sfc.exe)Step 2: If the issue still persists, check if any non Microsoft program is causing thisa. Open the article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353b. Under Method 2, follow Steps 1 and 2 and restart the computer to see if the issue persists.c. If the issue does not persist in clean boot, then follow step 3 and step 4 to find out that's causing the issue and once you've found the culprit, uninstall the program and check the result.Note: Do not forget to follow steps under "Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state"Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Hi MANFRED S,Try these steps and check the result.Step 1: As real media player has a problem, we suggest to uninstall all the non Microsoft media playersa. See How to change or remove a program in Windows XPb. Once you've removed the program, restart the computer and check the difference.Step 2: Check Windows Updates to see if there are any updates for media player and installa. See How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windowsb. Scan for the updates and install them.c. I could not find the media player to de-install on that list on the control panel-remove programs. Thought it is part of xp.After all I went back to Adam and Eve and restored to the original version of xp intertainment with the restore disksIt took a long time until I was back at xp sp3. As a reward the wmp works again.Thank you for your help.Manfred
