WAN pptp miniport gone, need to get it back
So i was having an issue with my WAN SSTP miniport and i followed instructions on how to go about fixing it in some xp forum but i didnt check and i removed the WAN PPTP device instead of the SSTP device. Now its gone and wont come back.I tried using a solution i found online using the devcon tool (same site) to reinstall the device but it fails everytime. I assumed it was due to the fact that i used the devcon from XP on Vista, so i downloaded the WDK for Vista, got the new devcon tool and ran it like this: devcon install %windir%\inf\netrasa.inf MS_PptpMiniporti still get a fail on update, not detailed information was given.Help! I need this to connect to a Project VPN and i do not look forward to the last resort of reinstalling the OS....Thanks,Adam

Hi Adam, Thank you for the post. Regarding this issue, I am afraid that we will have to perform an in-place upgrade on the Windows Vista operating system. Before that, please check if WAN Miniport (PPTP) and WAN Miniport (L2TP) are present in Device Manager: 1. Open Device Manager (Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc)2. Click on 'View' in the toolbar and select 'Show hidden devices'3. Expand the <Machine Name>\Network Adapters. If they are not present, we can try to uninstall and install the miniports manually to resolve the issue first. To do this, type the following commands in order from an elevated command prompt on the Windows Vista client: Netcfg -u MS_PPTPNetcfg -u MS_L2TPNetcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_PPTPNetcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_L2TP By the way, may I know the exact steps you performed to remove the WAN PPTP device? Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Uh, what a solution from Joson... I have used it in some other, but quite asituation on my Vista SP1... Once I had System Event Notification Servicehanging up upon startup, andthus not allowing regular users to login. Only local computer admins could login, but nothing they could do with my computer for half of the Vista services, especially the network ones were dead. Not even I could launch the event viewer. So after Googling, I found out, that 'netsh winsock reset' might help in this situation. I did that, and, uh, the *** started. All 50 virtual and real network adapters became disabled somehow... and computer bluescreened with 0x0000008e out of the blue... Randomly... In a minute after logging in, in two minutes after logging in... I had Checkpoint SecureClient installed on my comp... So I thought, the devil lies in it. I managed to uninstall it in those two minutes. Sure, Vista bluescreened upon hitting Finish of uninstallation. After restart without Checkpoint SecureClient, at least my system bluescreened no more. But 50 disabled adapters were still disabled. I have actually only two real adapters (Standard Network interface and Wireless), but you know Vista installs multiple 6TO4 adapters, Virtual Machine Services Adapters, Checkpoint installs its SecuRemote adapters... and then they were around 50. All disabled. I managed to somehow return back to normal state the majority of those adapters (though some of them bluescreened on me) by rightclicking and Updating their drivers, except, I just couldn't enable the seven WAN Miniports: WAN MiniPort (IP), WAN Miniport (IPv6),WAN Miniport (L2TP),WAN Miniport (Network Monitor),WAN Miniport (PPPOE), WAN Miniport (PPTP) andWAN Miniport (SSTP). So I did this: Netcfg -u MS_NDISWANNetcfg -l %windir%\inf\netrast.inf -c p -i MS_NDISWAN and all of the 7 Miniports came alive!!! Thanks Joson!
