W7 Indexing - Index Location
The index location was set for the F: drive. It failed, the drive has been removed. So indexing is not happening, and I can not move the index file location since it can't find it. There is plenty of room for the index to be on the C drive - but I can not set it to there because it can not find the old F: location. So the options in Advanced in the Indexing Locations in the Control Panel are not accessible. Short of installing a new F: drive - how to I set W7 indexing to store the file in a different location? Thoughts would be appreciated. Bruce - Burlington VT

First try the indexing trouble shooter. Press start and in the search window type "find and fix problems with windows search" the window opens and check the box that says apply errors automatically. Or stick in another HD call it F and then see if it works, if so move the indexing location back to C then remove the F drive, the defalt location is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft. Windows indexing can be turned off by going to programs and features in control panel and then "turn windows featurs on or off" on the left side. Given the problems it can cause I keep it turn off. There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who dont.

Find and fix errors - says it couldn't fix it. I think my only option is to put in another HD. I will try that this morning.Bruce - Burlington VT

I have a similar problem - caused when I merged two partitions. Unfortunately I can't create a new partition as I can no longer remember what the drive (partition) letter was, nor the name of the folder that held the index. I believe (hope...) that someone will know the registry entry which can be modified - I've tried all the usual options without success - including sfc, troubleshooter, FixIt, etc. The Event Logs report The gatherer service cannot be initialized. Details: The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible. Free up space on the drive or verify that you have write permission on the Temp folder. (HRESULT : 0x80070660) (0x80070660) and Event 7023 The Windows Search service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the path specified. Thanks in advance...
