W7 Allows me to see everyone machine?!
I've been test driving W7 for about a week now and really enjoy it so far. I was recently showing it to a friend at work whobrought in his XP laptop from home and was using work's wireless network. My W7 machine was able to see his computer on the network, and I was suddenly suprised to find that I had full access to his machine. This scared him a little. He has his laptop setup with user accounts, and was logged in as admin at the time.I got to wondering as to how I was able to do this. His laptop just appeared on my network and I double clicked it and was in.How does he keep people from getting access to his laptop without him knowing?! Aside from user accounts, does he have to set something else to prevent W7 users from having direct access to his computer?!Any help is welcome!Sean

Could be something to do with how the Work's wireless network is set up.

That's what I was thinking! but I don't recall being able to do this in Vista or XP. Is there a way for him to prevent people, such as myself, from accessing his XP machine with Windows 7?!

He needs to check out how things, especially sharing, are secured on his XP. You got into just what? The root of his C: drive? A public share of some folder? Just what did you see? Did you actually try to create a new file in, say, c:\Winnt folder? Lots of systems are set up as everyone can view, but actually doing something is another story.

Have your friend check his sharing settings. I know some people share their entire drive to make things easier for themselves at home, but it can cause problems when other people get on the network. He must have changed some settings to make this possible, it wouldn't happen if he just installed Windows XP and didn't change anything. -Nick
