Vista x64 Windows Update Problem
I have a really weird Update problem. I cant even find anything for the error code on google, the MS site, or on here. When trying to install updates using Windows Update i get the error code "c8e5e03fa". And when searching for updates it often does not work and i get the error code: c80003fa. But it never installs any updates it finds (it used to but dont now), thats if it does happen to find updates without getting an error.Even if i download the updates manually from MS's site it will not install them. Says they failed to install or i get the error message "Installer encountered an error: 0xc80003fa".I'm using Vista Ultimate by the way. Any help much appreciated...

No, to the previous reply. It looks like you need to follow the steps at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916258 Is it possible that you installed Vista over a prior XP machine? This is an XP error. I am surprised to see it pop up on Vista.

Thanks for the help, but after trying everything and even installing Vista again. I found out the problem was because myIntel Core 2 Duoprocessoris overclocked, it's running 1GHz above spec. XP was totally fine with it, but Vista's Windows Update will not work untill i lower the speed a little. Strange.

I'm using Vista Home Basic (x32) and I'm also getting this error message. My processor is NOT overclocked (mine is also a amd sempron and not intel). I have no idea what to do about this, anyone know?

I'm also using Vista Home Basic and I've check everything. I've set my laptop to download updates at a certain time and then I'll shut it down. I've never had trouble with the updates, but just recently I've experienced a problem. I go to shut down my lap top so the updates can install. I then restart it and it starts up like a normal start up, but after I log in it goes to a blank screen. I've been in touch with dell and they only give me the go around. This is repairing my computer by setting it backto a safe and secure point in time. But what I was wondering is what can I do to stop and prevent my computer from continuing to download this update that is causing this to happen?

I am having the same problem in windows vista and when I follow the directions on that page (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916258), I am not able to rename the Software Distribution folder. It says I need permission, and I am on an administrator account on this computer. I can't install updates and I can't even check for new updates now.
