Vista users are unable to change passwords that are expiring soon, works on Windows 7
We have some Vista Business users at Branch A that are getting notifications of expiring passwords, but when they try to change their password, they are present with the following message: "The user name or password is incorrect." I have verified that they have typed in the correct password in the Old Password field. I have verified that the time is synchronized on the all of the workstations and the server at Branch A with the servers at our Headquarters. I have verified that the same users are able to login to a Windows 7 Pro workstation and change their passwords at Branch A. I have verified that the same users are able to login to a Vista workstation and change their password at Branch B. Branch A has a read only domain controller and Branch B has a writeable domain controller. I do have password length, maximum age, complexity and history requirements in effect and these requirements are being met when attempting to change the password. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mark

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. From your description, I can’t really tell if it is system version specified or branch A or B specified. Am I correct by saying it is those Vista users in Branch A encounter the issue? The answer of this question will help us narrow down the root cause. But “Branch A has a read only domain controller and Branch B has a writeable domain controller” makes me start thinking it involved Server configuration. Hello Magon, Thanks for responding to my post. You are correct when you says that Vista users in Branch A encounter this issue. When the same users attempt to change their password on a Windows 7 computer at Branch A they are successful. Vista users in Branch B do not encounter this issue. The link you provided is not relevant to this post because users have not forgotten their password. Users in Branch A are unable to change their passwords when using a Vista computer. Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark, Some people resolve this issue by correcting the time. Please check those Vista PCs if their time is not syncing up properly. Hello Magon, Thanks again for your response. As mentioned in the original post, I have already verified that the time is properly synchronized. Thanks, Mark
