Vista to Vista network - permission problem, network connected but ...?
I have two Vista machines connected with a cross-over cable. (Vista home premium)Problem 1.I can access shared folders on either machine, no problem. I get the "Access denied error" when I try to access the C: drive over the network from either machine. I tried the following:I shared the C drives on both machines, and in advanced share options I gave permissions to everybody.I turned off the firewall on both machines.I deleted all connections and recreated with a new Workgroup name.Problem 2.I use a Huawei USB modem on my local (Portuguese) mobile cell network. No matter which machine I plug the modem into, the following occurs:The machine with the modem attached shows the workgroup as being public even though I set it up as being private. The machine with the modem attached shows - "unidentified network". If I change this to a private network, this only lasts until I restart. Then it reverts back to "public". The machine with the modem attached also goes missing from the network map. This same setup worked just fine on one XP and one Vista machine connected the same way. It would only work with the modem plugged into the XP machine though. This is rather involved, I know, but I'm sure I am not alone in this problem.

Problem 1: When accessing a share across the network, you must pass *both* the share permissions (set up when you create the share) and the NTFS permissions (which show up on the Security tab of a file/folder in Windows Explorer). Quick and dirty solution (this is not "secure" by any definition of the word but should work). Also not that I am doing this on Vista Business and it's been a while since I've used a Home version of the OS, so bear with my errors if thing are different here. You will need to perform these steps on *both* machines. Assuming your login name is "Bob" - both machines must have an account named "Bob" with the same password, in the User Accounts control panel. If the passwords are different, or user names are different, you will be prompted for a name/password every time youinitiate access the share. Open Windows Explorer. Right-click on the C: drive, choose Properties. Go to the Security tab, click "Edit", click "Add...", add the "Bob" account to the list of users, click on the "Bob" account under Group or user names:, click on the Modify - Allow checkbox, click on Apply. Click on the sharing tab, click on "Advanced Sharing", tick off "Share this folder", change share name to "DriveC", click on "Permissions", REMOVE "Everyone" from the share permissions, click on "Add...", add the "Bob" account to the list of users, click on the "Bob" account under group or user names:, click on the Change - Allowcheckbox, then click on OK, OK, Close. This gives you access to 99% of the things you would typically want to do on the file system on the other machine.
