Vista not recognising my anti-virus program and defender won't turn on
Hi, I've got vista home premium and had no problems with my anti virus software. Then a few days ago it has stopped detecting my anti-virus (i'm using avg free edition 7.5), i uninstalled it then re-installed it but to no success. Also windows defender is turned off, when i go to turn it on it says searching for definitions then says there are no new definitions to download and won't turn it on. I've recently started usinf a modem router but can't see that this is causing a problem. My computer is all up to date with vista updates. Anyones help on this would be apprecited as i'm not sure if i'm protected. Thanks

I have the exact same problem.Vista Ultimate. Noticed Windows Security Center not detecting antivirus softwars (avg free edition 7.5). Uninstalled it then re-installed avg. Vista does still not detect avg. And I have the same problem with defender. Windows Security Center reports Windows Defender is turned off, when i go to turn it on it says searching for definitions then says there are no new definitions to download and won't turn it on.Both programs will run on command and as run as scheduled. Both are not detected by Windows Security Center.Did you get this resolved Sam?

I did a scan and found some viruses, computer was running real slow aswell, so as my computer is pretty new and not a lot of stuff on it i formatted my hard drive and re-installed everything. Seems a bit drastic but could'nt find any help anywhere on this, and as i said computer is pretty new so not a lot of info on it. I use my computer a lot for financial stuff so did'nt want to take any risks. Sam

Here is what you do...1. Back up all of your stuff to an external hard drive or to CD/DVD.2. Go to www.ubuntu.com and download Ubuntu 7.04 "Fiesty Fawn" completely free of charge.3. Burn the downloaded image to CD.4. Boot your computer using the CD. This will take you to a Linux (GNOME) desktop. If you like it; click install, follow the easy steps, and never have to deal with anti-virus software again (I haven't had a virus in over a year, and I don't have any antivirus software). If you don't like it just restart the computer, throw the disk away, and try to figure out the Windows issue. Once you install, Ubuntu Linux will run much faster, so don't let the live CD version scare you away completely.Good luck. Ubuntu = "Humanity to others"Open Source Software = Software that is freely (as in free speech, not always as in free beer) available to anyone and everyone.

For information about Security updates, visit the Microsoft Virus Solution and Security Center for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you are having issues with installing the update itself, visit Support for Microsoft Update for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates. PenguinPerry Go look at www.secunia.com and see how many security holes they are in ubuntu, and doinga a default install has lots security issues. If you do not configure ANY computer properly you have risks.

Thx Paul. Looks like this may be a common problem. Vista will not let me delete the repositry folder - says it is in use. Any idea what application needs to be stopped so repositry can be deleted? Thanks

MS support responded with an alternate fix. Boot to safe mode, in cmd mode, type winmgmt /verifyrespository. If the message WMI repository INCONSISTENT is returned, type winmgmt /salvagerepository. If successful, reboot. If not, type winmgmt /resetrepository, then reboot.

x2 man. Thanks. One diffrence with mine though; "Restart" wasgrayed out forthe "Windows Management Instrumentation" app, and would only allow me to "Start" it after I followed your instructions. Hopes this info helps others in some way

Hey mr fix it,Thanks so much. I don't consider myself a computer expert but I do know computers fairly well. I tried so many different things to rectify this stupid problem and nothing worked. Thanks to your easy steps and clearly marked screen shots, everything is resolved. Thanks so much.

The fix is not to replace Vista as some have stated but to follow the above. I did not delete the folder but just renamed it to OLD and it worked first time. Now the question is WHY did this happen? What is a Vista Quick, Virus, Spyware or "something else"? PAUL - Do you have any tips on making Vista faster on boot up? :-)

Many thanks Paul - worked well. Has come back once since but worked again so thanks again. Can you explain what is happening - so that I can prevent it recurring again? Regards - GeoffreyC

Thanks, Paul, for the lifeline. I used most of that fix, but had to go into Safe Mode to rename the folder, 'old' because of the "folder in use" message. Nick and others, if it happens again, I'm going to try the wrong-click on the webn folder option of "restore previous versions". I've never tried it - if it works, great, but will know what to do now if it doesn't.

I concurr with Linux as the cure to windows.... but there are a few sideline issues that keep Linux in the limelight.1. ppl pushing something down someones throat.. --- don't give a techie answer to a layman's question --- your answer didnt resolve the question --- remember the learning curve, and what is it for --- and in what environment ?? home or office2. going your route and getting Ubuntu ... ---- which one ??? Gubuntu ... Kubuntu ...Xubuntu ...in you're ignorannce you didnt define the "flavour"Ubuntu doesnt give viable supportI trtied that distro and was forced to dump it3. the data you told said person to archive to disc prior to install--- given the naming conventions of linux i doubt the proper app needed would be readily visible to client--- and if the app can open/edit said archive docs .... if edited are they still useable within original windows prog.4. I do @ very least give you credit and not fault you for referring to a live boot version instead of a full installI personally find Mandriva easier alternative to windows..and Gnome isnt Linux its a desktop themeand for those that are coming from windows KDE would be more like what they are used toAFTER they decide to keep linux and get used to it they will realize all the variants..as for a quick recovery OS i use DSL..http://damnsmalllinux.org/download.html porting to linux may resolve the issue of virii in the PC but doesnt mean that client WANTS to changethere is that old line about a horse and leading it to water .... same thing herepeople are prone to habit.. if they are forced to use windows long enough they will keep paying for all that comes with itjust because it is what they have become accustomed to and are used to... Linux also has an image of geekdom to it.. most people dont even realize that any operating system is only as easy as the interface (GUI) and windows is the M$ GUI not the OS; I have been asked lots of times how I can use linux as ppl still think its command line.

seems rather simple ty for the fix... but it needed for more apps wouldn't it be just easier to stop the service and leave it that way??
February 11th, 2008 9:00am

Thanks Paul (mr. Fix It)! One thing I had to do though was go into properties of Windows Management Instrumentation, change it from automatic to manual, then stop it. Did steps 3 and 4 , reset to automatic in properties, then restarted Windows management instrumentation again. Reboot, go into control panel etc just as you said, find my Eset Nod and Windows defender happily running. Thank you.John

I'm glad i posted about this problem, it seems that a lot of people have had this problem and by putting heads together it has been solved. Many thanks to the people who have helped solve this problem, as it seems so many people have it. AND lets hope microsft as a MULTI BILLION DOLLAR company can release products in the future that will not comprimise it's users personal security.

like you i also have vista home premium and also downloaded avg 7.5 but it has never been detected by windows securiy centre,so today i downloaded the latest version, AVG 8.0.1 ,which offers moe protection after uninstalling the 7.5 version but it's still not detecting the antivirus telling me i am not protected against viruses but i do.The 8.0.1 version was just released on 24th of this month so give it a try as it offers you more protection and hope you have better luck than me! ps.How can you make sure your computer is up to date with vista updates? as i am also unsure if my computer is fully protected, although AVG notified me that i am.Thanks,Laura.

I have tried everything on this thread to no avail. I just tried the boot to safe mode and resetrepository, and it gave me a message that the repository was rest, but when I rebooted, nothing has changed and there is no repository folder in system32/wbem/ only my old renamed repository folder. Bugger. Why does it work for everyone else? Who is up for a challenge? I really don't want to have to reinstall this machine right now.More info available about my problem on this thread

There are two general approaches that may fix your problem. All of the commands are typed in manually at the command prompt (type "cmd" and ENTER in your start menu). Run as administrator. Method 1: winmgmt /verifyrepository If WMI repository is reported to be inconcistent, run the following command: winmgmt /salvagerepository Method 2: net stop winmgmt /y ren %windir%\system32\wbem\repository %windir%\system32\wbem\repository.old (make sure there is a space between the two paths) Then restart. Hi Kristain or anybody who can help, I want to change something in startup. Go to Control panel, clicking on Startup programs- the windows open saying that Windows Defender is turned off, and I can turn it on... so i click on hyperlink to turn it on- nothing happens.. If I go to Computer- Manage- Windows defender- to turn it on- green line starts loading, then it says "Windows Defender stopped... because it won't needed" or smth.like that. And this problem with Windows Defender I've got since I downloaded Norton. Any suggestions?

Hi Kristain, None of it is working. First two give the same answer: WMI repository verification failed, error code 0x80041003 And method 2 - hope I understood it right- 4 different commands- I dialed them one by one- all of them failed. I'm sorry I'm not advanced very much- I printed it correctly but i don't know how to copy the screen in DOS to paste it here
