Vista networking system tray icon disappears
Just now, I started Vista and the networking icon (in the system tray) was completely missing. But I was still connected. This happened a few months ago, but it was right after a Windows Update. In that case I rebooted and then looked at Notification Tray (right click on Start) and had to check Networking again. However, today, it was not right after an update, and to fix it, I just had to reboot and that's it. I mentioned this in the thread below and the only suggestions were to play with the registry or load the updates not all at once. Any better suggestions? I'm okay now but it's disturbing. http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/287472-windows-updates-changes-system-tray-icons.html

Additional info: I have a Vista SP2 home computer and a DSL modem, that's it. There is always a volume icon next to my clock, usually with the blue curves near it. But when I was having this problem, this volume icon had no blue curves near it. When I mentioned Notification Tray, what I mean was Right click on Start > Properties > Notification Area tab.

I did a full scan and found nothing. I've found other threads of people with the same problem. It's most likely a Vista quirk that they never fix. (see the link in my first post)

Hi, Sorry for the late response. Have you tired Restore default icon behaviors on the notification Area Icons->Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar. If the issue persists, it might be due to currupted registry and I suggest we try the method.
