Vista machine cannot see XP machine on same network
I’m going crazy with this. I have a home network which is set up using a Linksys wireless router. My vista machine is hardwired to the router and my XP machine is connected wirelessly. For a couple of years everything worked just fine. Recently my Vista machine cannot see the XP machine. I can ping the router from the XP machine but I cannot share any files or use the network printer. Both machines can connect to the internet without any problem. I have tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you restarted the router yet? Its possible a security update was applied to the Vista machine, see if both machines are in the same workgroup. When you say you've tried everything, can you tell us what you have tried so we don't give you suggestions that you've already tried? Which machine (Vista or XP) is the printer connected to? Review this article and see if there's anything there that helps you http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7589_102-0.html?threadID=232132MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Cdobbs, Thanks for the reply. Both machines are in the same workgroup. I’ve attempted to use the network wizard on the XP machine several times with no luck. I haven’t done anything with the wireless router. Because my XP machine can access the internet wirelessly with no problem I didn’t think it could have been the problem. I’ll give that a try and get let you know what happens. thanks

Urgh!!! Ok here is where I’m at with the problem. I reset the router as you suggested; nothing changed. I downloaded and installed the hot fix # KB922120-V6 from the Microsoft support site. This was supposed to fix the problem of a Vista machine not seeing an XP machine on a home network. (Exactly my problem) There was one notable change; now when I go to my vista machine and ask it to display the network map the xp machine appears... but is mapped showing it connected to the router with a broken (dotted) line not a solid line. I can not access the machine; I can only see it in the network. I have internet access on each machine but no file access or printer sharing on the XP machine. If this info helps, the xp machine has XP Pro with the following updates: .net Framework 1.1, .net Framework 1.1 Security update, .net Framework 2.0 SP 2, .net Framework 3.0 SP2, .net Framework 3.5 SP1, and Microsoft Data Access Components KB870669. (Seems like a lot of updates) Any Help at all would be so appreciated. Thank you The Any ideas Please!!!
