Vista in Workgroup
I know this issue has been much covered here but after spening sometime reading various posts here and elsewhere I cannot find answer to my scenario.I have just installed a new system into a small network, the new system is running Vista - everything works OK with one exception, all the existing systems (running XP and W2000) can see the new system as a member of their workgroup, but the Vista based system can't see them as part of that workgroup. On the Vista system, network discovery is on, file sharing is on, public folder sharing is on for read only, password protected sharing is off, media sharing is off.I've done the following progressively. I can ping the XP systems from the Vista System & vica versaI have installed the Link Level Responder on an XP system, that had no effectI have turned of the Windows Firewall on an XP Computer, that had no effectI have turned off the Norton Firewall that's installed on the Vista system, that had no effectI initiated a new Workgroup from the Vista System and joined an XP system to it, that had no effectAt each step the Vista and the XP System have been restartedRgds PhilD

Hi Philip, As in most cases the culprit is firewall, I suggest temporarily uninstalling the Norton Firewall to check the result. If the issue persists, please run the net view command on the Windows Vista computer and let me know the result. Hope it helps.

Yeah I ditched the Norton Firewall, I had that on my todo list anyway. Made no difference. What I discovered is that if I had lunch then Vista will discover the XP machines - it just takes a long time. Of course if one keeps changing things and restarting the system then the "long time" starts over. A decent coffee break also works.Rgds PhilD

Hi Philip, Please collect the following information for further research: 1. Network packets:================1) Download NetMon3.1 from the following website and install it on the Windows Vista machine:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en2) Log onto the Windows Vista machine, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.1.3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click Create a new capture tab 4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon.6) Open a Command Prompt (cmd.exe), type net view and press Enter.7) After it completes, please let me know the result. Then, go back to the Netmon window and press F11 to stop the Netmon.8) Press Ctrl+S to save the netmon file. 2. System Information:=================1) Click Start, type msinfo32 on the Start Search box.2) On the System Information window, click File, and click Save to export the system information to a .NFO file. After that, please zip and upload the above two files to the following space: https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=10a959fe-88fb-48ba-9e16-4e0ecf4f04b1 Password: z%t)@HO6%SX%NRnN Note: Please drop a quick note in the current thread to inform me after uploading the information.
