Vista home premium loosing network accesss but can ping.
I have a Satellite A215-S7411 with home premium on it that about once a day looses it's wireless connection to the network for all practical purposes, but not completely. What I mean is that I can not use IE, or access any of my internal network, but I can still ping both internal and external websites (including www.yahoo.com). I have turned off power mangement for the network adaptor, Realtek TRL8187B, and that didn't fix it. I have updated the driver for the wireless adaptor and that didn't help. I have checked the firewall settings, even turning it off, and that didn't help. I've gone through the event viewer and don't see anything that throws up a flag. When the problem comes, I have tried rebooting the Linksys wireless router, but no change there either. (When it comes back up and assigns an address I can still ping but nothing else). I've no idea what is going on and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I could be wrong but I think this started when I installed the service pack 1 for vista. I rolled back the first time this happened after installing, but the problem remains. In order to fix it, all I do is reboot and everything is back to normal. I've also tried to have vista repair the adpter and it does not work. I've also tried turning the adapter on and off physically (via the laptop switch) and still no go. Thanks, Robert

Nice to see I have everyone else stumped too. I tried turning off auto tuning and it didn't help. I also disabled my wireless adaptor and used my ethernet jack...same thing so it's not a wireless card issue.

Hi Robert, Please confirm if the Windows Update KB 944533 is installed on the Windows Vista machine. If so, refer to the resolution in the following KB article: Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818/ In addition, Ive also included some articles for troubleshooting IE7 issues: How to troubleshoot network connectivity problems in Internet Explorer http://support.microsoft.com/?id=936211 You receive an error message in Internet Explorer 7: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" http://support.microsoft.com/?id=926431 How to troubleshoot compatibility problems that affect Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/?id=936214 Hope it helps.

Thank you for your response, however the problem is not limited to internet explorer. It issome sort of larger networking issue. I can not access other machines on the network when this happens. I do have KB944533 installed, but as my problem goes beyond IE, it doesn't seem to to be the answer. Any other ideas?

Hi Robert, Based on the current situation, I suggest uninstalling the KB944533 to narrow down the cause of the issue. In addition, what is the exact wording of the error message when you try to access the other machines on the network? Please boot into Safe Mode with Networking and check if the issue disappears.
