Vista cannot access XP shared folders on network
Well here we go again.I am afraid this is not a new problem but maybe a new solution is required. Setup;- 2 x self Build PCs, XP Pro SP3 fully updated. Speedtouch 780 modem/router (wired connection) One with Windows Firewall the other with ZoneAlarm (free edition ip addresses allowed) Everything works fine. File sharing works, both fully visible to each other. Add Dell Vostro 1710 notebook with Vista SP1 updated. shared resources specified. Connected Wirelessly. From XP end everything works as before. Plus XP machinesCAN access shared resources on the Vista machine. However Vista machineCANNOT access resources on the XP machines. In network on the Vista machine the XP PCs are visible and clicking on each you can see the shared folders/printers etc. but clicking on the shared folder brings up the dreaded "\\xxx\xxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have network permissions. The specified network name is no longer available." Bizarrely, the vista window will show the usage of the resource, total space, free space etc. So it knows it is there but will not grant access. Having spent several hours trawling through the web hereare the settingsI have tried so far. On Vista machine- Workgroups - setto MSHOME on all PCs network set to Private Network network discovery - on file sharing - on public folder sharing - on printer sharing - on password protected sharing - on/off (makes no difference) media sharing - on File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks - on firewalls on or off no change on XP machines- Simple file sharing on- no change Simple file sharing Off - access specified as Full Control to Everyone - no change I have now run out of ideas. Next stop downgrade to XP?!%". I would be forever grateful for inspiration. IT SHOULD NOT BE THIS DIFFICULT. Doug

Hi, I suggest performing the following steps to check the result: Create an account with the same user name and password on the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines. Add this account to Administrators group on the Windows XP machines. Temporarily turn off the firewall on the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines. Log onto Windows Vista with this user account and access the share folder. Hope it helps.
