Vista can't access Windows Server 2000 share
Hi,I got a call from my Dad yesterday saying that he had just set upa Windows Server 2000 file server with a new share and needed help getting the work stations in his office connected to it. They only have 2 work stations so they're just using a workgroup and not a domain. When opening the shared folderon the first machine, which runs XP, he was prompted for credentials, entered the username and password defined on the server and connected fine. When he tried the same thing from the second machine, which runs Vista home premium, it would refuse the connection. The login window would just keep popping up. A quick google search led me to changing the LMCompatabilityLevel key in the registry from 3 to 1. After changing that, it worked! I just don't know what we did. I read the description of the two levels on an MS documentation page...something about whether it's using NTLM or NTLMv2...but I don't have the background to understand it.Can someone explain in general terms what it is that I had him change? Is there a way to change this w/out editing the registry? Was it a good idea to change it? Thanks!

You cannot change the NTLM in Home versions of Vista without using the Registry. Otherwise, you could have used secpol.mscto make this change. If you haven't already, I suggest you review this TechNet article on file and printer sharing with Vista. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspxEric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com
