Vista and XP network
I have a vista 32 desktop attached directly to a wireless router with a cable. I have an XP SP2laptop and a Vista 64 laptop, both are wireless. The desktop can view and share files with bothlaptops. The Vista laptopcan share with the Vista desktop but not the XP laptop.the XP laptop can't seethe other two computers. All 3 have internet access. I have triedshutting down the firewalls onall 3 computers. No change. I can ping each computer by name. Theyare all on thesame network name: mshome. I have installed the LLTD program on the XP. Ican't get the XP to "see" the Vista computers. Help, I have read nearly every post out there, I am stumped.

Hi, Can you access the Windows Vista desktop from the Windows XP SP2 computer? I suggest that you enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP ============================ 1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter. 2. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties". 3. Click Continue button to verify the administrator permission. 4. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties". 5. Click "Advanced" button in the open window. On the "WINS" tab, click to select "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP", and then click "OK" to save the setting. If the issue persists, please let me know if you have enabled Guest account, or you are trying to use same username/password on all of the computers to access other computers. I suggest that we enable Guest account as a test. Enable Guest account in Windows Vista. ============================ 1. Click the Start Button, input cmd (without quotation marks), right click on the Cmd.exe in the search result list and select Run as administrator. 2. Type "net user guest /active:yes" (without quotation marks) in the open window and press Enter Key. Enable Guest account in Windows XP. ============================ 1. Click the Start->Run. 2. In the open box type "net user guest /active:yes" in the open window and press Enter Key. Please check if the network works properly now. If the issue persists, please let me know the exact error message is it is received when the issue occurs. Please try to access the other computer by its IP address. In Windows Vista, click Start, in the Start Search box type \\[IP address of Windows XP computer] to access the Windows XP computer. On Windows XP, Click Start->Run, in the open box type \\[IP address of Windows Vista computer] to access the Windows Vista computer. If any error message is received, let me know the detail information. Please also let me know the system version of the Windows Vista system and the Windows XP system. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the help. My XP computer does not have IPv4 installed. Username/Password: All 3 computers have different usernames. Passwords were not used. Laptops: Vista Home Premium 64 bit and XP SP2 Home Edition ( I think this is what you wanted to know) I can "see" the other computers from my XP from the run command. The Vista 64 laptop requests a password. Curious I have not set-up a password. I then tried it with the Vista 32 desktop and was able to access that computer. I then went to 32 desktop. The Vista 64 laptop can now see the XP laptop and the XP laptop can now see the Vista 32 desktop through Explorer. I went through the Vista 64 computer to find a password. I could not find any passwords that have been set up. I went through user account and found no password. I checked the network settings and "password protected sharing" was turned off. So, I do not know what I did but in the process of performing your suggestions but I now have more connectivity. The only problem now is the XP laptop seeing the Vista 64 laptop. I think the linchpin now is that the XP laptop sees a password on the Vista 64 laptop. The Vista 32 desktop does not see the same password request. I hopw this is not too confusing. Thanks.

Hi, Maybe the Windows Vista laptop has blocked anonymous accesses. On Windows Vista laptop please launch "Regedit" in Start Search box, navigate to the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA Making "RestrictAnonymous" and ,"Restrict anonymous sam" values as 0. Then restart. If the issue still occurs, please enable Guest account in the 64bit Windows Vista system. Enable Guest ======================== 1. Click the Start Button, input "cmd" (without quotation marks), right click on the Cmd.exe in the search result list and select Run as administrator. 2. Type "net user guest /active:yes" (without quotation marks) in the open window and press Enter Key. Then assure that Guest is allowed to access from network. 1. Click Start. In the Start Search box type gpedit.msc 2. Find the branch Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment. 3. In the right pane, check the policy "Access this computer from the network". Make sure that Guest or its group is in the list. Please let us know if it helps. Additionally, if you have enabled Guest account on the Windows Vista 32bit computer. Hope it works.
