Vista and XP Strange Network Problems
Hi, I really hope someone can help me with this issue I'm having. I currently run a Wireless network at home consisting of 3 PC's (2 winxp and 1 vista ultimate). I am running DHCP from the wireless access point, and all the PC's obtain IP's and can access the internet, my problem is this.... The 2 XP machines can comunicate with the printer and each other, and the vista machine is visable in the "my network places" screen, but you cannot access it! when you click on it it simply tells you that the path does not exist (but you can see that its there!!!) even when you try start run => \\vistapc it tells you there is no such path name, the same applies to the vista machine, when viewing the full network map you can see the XP machines and their IP's, but you cant connect to them. Ihave downloaded and installed the LLTD update on the XP machines and file and printer sharing is active on all 3 machines. I have also tried disabling the firewall on the vista machine to no avail. Please Advise urgently. Thanks Don

Hi Don, Is it a workgroup or a domain environment? Can you ping the Windows Vista from the Windows XP machines? If it is a workgroup environment, please try to access the share folder on Windows Vista from the Windows XP via the following method: 1. On all these three machines, create a user account with the same password. 2. On a Windows XP machine, open a command prompt (cmd.exe) 3. Type the following command:net use \\<IPAddressOftheVistaMachine>\<ShareFolder> /user:<the user account we created in step 1> 4. Please mark down the error message and the error code if it fails. If it successes, you will see the following output:The command completed successfully. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Joson, I thank you for your reply. I actually sorted this problem out last night, what i found was that norton antivirus had disabled file and printer sharing! Thanks and Regards Don

Don, I can't help you but I can empathize. I just installed the long awaited Windows XP SP3 RC...and having some minor bugs...ie loss of Windows Update, slowness on Genuine Advantage, and the like I wanted to report them to the Company for it's own good, but find that the only way MS is willing to connect with me is either $59/minute or just post some thing in a Technet Forum and hope SOMEONE replies...this is a strange network indeed. Good Luck, Darrel
