Vista and Wireless - does it work now compared to RTM?
Hi there! I am thinking of using Vista now but have a question. Internet access is crucial for me andI had very bad experience with Vista Ultimate RTM on a notebook computer. What happened was this: Vista RTM'ed and I clean installed a copy onto an ASUS 15" notebook computer. All seemed to work well, Internet access via Ethernet on the company's premises worked too. Then I had to do a business trip and took the portable computer with me. In the hotel I found a wireless network and could connect to it, too. But I never got past the login screen of the hotel on which I was supposed to enter the code that granted me access to the Internet. There was absolutely no way to get into the Internet in the hotel. It was like something was blocking mefrom going past the hotel's network, but it wasn't so. All of my coworkers who used Windows XP on their notebook computers had absolutely no problems. Only I was the one who couldn't access the company's resources via the Internet. :-( It wasn't a wireless problem by the way since plugging in an Ethernet cable did not positively affect the situation. Does anybody remember a situation like this and could kindly tell me if there have been patches since Vista RTM'ed which fix the problem? Thanks a lot in advance! cheerio Thomas

Hi Thomas, Its hard to say whether the Windows Vista final version will connect the computer to the Internet in the hotel now. However, Windows Vista has fixed many bugs found in Windows Vista RTM, and Microsoft has released a lot of updates for the system. In addition, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will be officially released soon. It will greatly improve the system performance and resolve many known issues. During the past one year, third-party hardware manufacturers have released their drivers compatible with Windows Vista. Therefore, Windows Vista works much better than Windows Vista RTM does a year ago. I think its time to use Windows Vista. Your issue on Windows Vista RTM may have been fixed now. If the issue still occurs, it can be probably caused by hardware limitations or incorrect configurations. Tim Quan - MSFT
