Vista and 2000 network issues - unable to log in
In short, a windows vista home computer doesn't want to log onto windows 2000 server.I have a windows 2000 server that has a number of other networked computers able connect happily, and a new vista computer that is having issues. The server has a workgroup, no domain. Networking with the other computers is via TCP/IP and SPX protocals (for whatever reason, the gremlins in one program don't speak TCPanese). All computers have the same user/password combo (ahem, in reality, 2-4, but one common to all computers for all staff members). When I browse the local network, the vista computer shows all computers on the network (including XP and 2k home, without the ldds(?) update mentioned elsewhere, and can view printers and the random shared folder on every other computer, running win 2k, xp. When the vista computer tries to browse the server's shared folders (which are really the only ones that count), it asks for a login box. When I try to login (with various username/password combos that reside on the server), I get an error message, 'unable to login, make sure your username and password' are correct, and the login box shows again, with the username changed to computername\username.Zonealarm and norton antivirus are happy on the server, and allow the IP address of the vista; firewalls and antivirus are turned off on vista; both computers can ping each other, the vista is happy to browse the internet (the server can't, it's set to not go online to prevent coworkers from downloading happy happy viruses)

Minor update: From windows explorer, if in the address bar I type in \\server\, I get the loging box that never logs me in. If I type in one of the other computers, ex \\reception\ I get no loging box, but can view folders and printers (like I mentioned in the past post) I installed our business software on the vista laptop, to see if it was compatible. On the server Sybase's Adaptic Server Anywhere (version 7, I think) nis running, listening on TCP and SPXports. Our softwareon the vista laptop isable to connect to ASA just fine, but when it tries to open one of the shared folders on the server, it can't.

I have found the solution. At last! On the Vista machine. Open Control Panel - select Windows Firewall - select Change Settings - reply Allow to User Account Control dialog - 'Windows Firewall Settings' is then displayed, select the Exceptions tab - it will take a minute or two to change the display contents - a scrollable list of checkable exceptions is displayed in alphabetical order - find the exception "Netlogon Service" in the list and select the checkbox - select OK. Try to connect from your Vista machine. You should no longer be asked for the network password.
