Vista always asks for username and password when connecting to xp machine
Windows vista always asks for username and password to connect to xp machine but does not work even if I pass the correct username and password credentials. What is happening? Additional Details: I just bought a laptop with windows vista home premium (wireless) and I am trying to connect it to my windows xp desktop (wired)through a home network. I have setup the network to where each computer can see each other. And I can view shared files that reside on the vista machine from my xp desktop. However, when I try to connect to my xp machine through the vista machine it asks me for username and password. The username and password thatI use to access the account directly on the xp machine does not work when I trying toaccess the xp machine through vista. Any idea on why username and passworddoes not work through vista?(I can ping both machines)

Hi zuxh, Thank you for the post. Please try the following steps to resolve the issue:===================================================== Enable the Guest account on the Windows XP system. If the issue persists, please create the same account with the same password on both Windows Vista and Windows XP machines, and log onto the Windows Vista machine with the account to check the result. If the issue persists, please capture a screenshot of the error message for further research. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Joson, I tried both methods you mentioned in your post, but neither worked. When I enable the guest account I get an error message. I took a screen shot of the error, but I do not see a way to attach a file to my post. Is there another way to send the file? With the other method, when I create the same account on both machines (username and password) I do not get an error message but the username and password do not work. The username and password dialog box re-appears again asking me to input my credentials once more. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks

Hi On the XP machine, create a new administrator account and assign a password to it, go to start > run > type in secpol.msc. That will open a window called Local Security Settings. Expand Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > and it the right pane, double click "Access this computer from the network". Remove "Everyone" from the list and add the username you have created. Also make sure you have something shared on the XP machine.

YounGun, Thanks for the tips. I was finally able to network my xp machine from vista. I followed the steps in your post and actually when I took out the Everyone group, I still was not able to log in. In fact, I no longer got the log in screen, but instead got an error message. So I added back the Everyone group and once I did I was able to access my shared folders on my xp machine. And I don't even need to enter a username and password, i.e. no need for second account! Thanks for the help!

I'm getting a similar problem, but it's when trying to connect to a NetGear router via wireless. The Vista box had the Vundo virus and had to be wiped and the Vista OS reloaded. Before, there was no problem connecting; the box went straight to the WEP input screen and connected. Now, it goes to a username, password and domain request, but I have no username, password or domain to provide. However, there are many other wireless networks in the area. Trying to connect to each of those goes to the WEP screen. It is only when trying to connect to mine, that it asks for the user information.Other systems - even another Vista system - have no problem connecting and do not ask for username, etc. They, properly, ask for the WEP key and log on with no problem.Any ideas?

Hi Adam, I assume you got an answer to this, but I will post anyway... I just had the same issue with my netgear router (WM2000) I couldn't solve the problem using the automatic connection wizard that Vista has, I ended up making a connection manually Control Panel | Network and Sharing Centre | Manage Network Connections From there I added a new connection and entered details manually. seemed to work a treat after that. Cheers Matt
