Vista VPN server does not share Internet connection
Hello all, I successfully set up an incoming VPN connection, using Vista's built-in PPTP server. Remote users can connect. But when remote users connect, they cannot use the Internet. They are restricted to the Vista host's network (which is actually one computer, the Vista host). Windows firewall is off on the host machine. When I had Windows 7 beta running on this hardware, it worked as I want - VPN clients can access the WWW via the VPN. The Windows 7 setup was the same machine, same router, same DSL connection, same location. Nothing changed except I reverted to Vista when the beta expired.

Hi, This problem arises when the VPN client software is configured to use the VPN server as its default gateway. This is the default setting for the Microsoft VPN client software. Since all Internet hosts are remote from the VPN client's location, Internet connections are routed to the VPN server. If the VPN server is not configured to allow Internet connections from VPN clients, the Internet connection attempts fail. The solution to this problem is to configure the VPN server to allow VPN clients access to the Internet. The Windows RRAS server supports this configuration, and so do many firewalls. Resist the urge to disable the setting configuring the VPN client to use the VPN server as its default gateway, as this enables split tunneling, which is a well-known VPN client security risk. You may need to enable TCP/IP forwarding however. The solution to this problem is to configure the VPN server to allow VPN clients access to the Internet. How? I have Googled all over and have not found a solution. What is odd is there was no complication when I had Windows 7 as the VPN server. I created an incoming connection with default settings, and my clients connected using default settings. How to Enable TCP/IP Forwarding in Windows XP As explained in the original post, I am not using Windows XP Troubleshooting Vista VPN problems I have a Vista VPN server problem. That page is about Vista VPN client.
