Vista VPN connection to RRAS (Server 2003) disconnects after a few seconds
When I attempt to VPN from a Vista Client to a VPN server running RRAS on Windows Server 2003 I can authenticate successfully but then the connection is terminated right away. The client then pops up the VPN connection dialog and asks if I want to reconnect. On the client machine a message is logged: CoID={DF9E842B-49D9-4EFC-95C4-061E0ACBF4DF}: The user[Removed] dialed a connection named[Removed] which has terminated. The reason code returned on termination is 829. The server has a message in the security event log which indicates that the client disconnected intentionally: Event ID: 20194 The user[Removed] connected on port[Removed] on [Removed] and disconnected on [Removed]. The user was active for 2 minutes 40 seconds. 1820 bytes were sent and 381 bytes were received. The reason for disconnecting was user request. A previous event indicated that strong authentication was in use: The user[Removed] has connected and has been successfully authenticated on port [Removed]. Data sent and received over this link is strongly encrypted. I have tried every permutation of connection sections that I could think of and I haven't found any that work. Does anyone here have any clues as to why the Vista client is disconnecting?

I am having the same problem, but mine happens as soon as authentication takes place. I am connecting to a Windows 2003 server running ISA 2004. I connect, and pass the "verifying user name and password" stage. As soon as the message comes up to say "registering your computer on the network", I get disconnected. When I run the diagnostic tool, I get this error message: Event Type: Information Event Source: Microsoft-Windows-User-PnP Event Category: None Event ID: 20003 Date: 2007/02/18 Time: 07:59:06 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer:my computer nameDescription:Cannot enumerate Registry key values. tunnel When I look in the application event log, this is the error message I get: "The userdomain\username dialed a connection namedconnection_name which has terminated. The reason code returned on termination is 829. I have installed all Vista Updates, including the ones referring to Vista VPN issues, but no luck Anybody have a solution?

Hello, I am also having the same issue: This is what I get in the event viewer: CoID={01F68809-2AE8-4243-A2EE-5271E7FE8E22}: The user domain\username dialed a connection named VPNNAME which has terminated. The reason codereturned on termination is 829. Is there a solution available??? Maredzki

I think I have figured out the issue on my end. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=930163 Despite the fact that his is an important Windows Update, it didn't show up on the update list and I had to install the patch manually. Because I commonly connect via a wire at the office and via wireless at home the default route could be either one based on when I last rebooted the laptop. Installing the patch seems to fixed the issue.

Tried the update - didn't help Have one PC that I upgraded from XP to Vista and VPN works. Have another PC that I installed Vista fresh and cannot sustain a VPN connection. Connects, registers on the network, and then disconnects. Occassionally it will remain connected for a few minutes during which time I can ping the remote network. Have another PC, a MACPRO, running Vista x64, and get the same results. Have another PC in the office that I retained as an XP machine and the VPN is solid. Googled everything but no solution. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have had the same problem, but only since upgrading my server (internet gateway) to Windows Server 2003 R2, with ISA Server 2004. I am certain that this is the source of my problem, but cannot resolve it despite spending MANY hours trying! The router that provides the server a connection to the internet is Level-One WBR-3402A running firmware version R1.01f6TIG, which appears to be the latest available. I mention this, as I still suspect (as was the case before I upgraded the firmware) that this router is not compatible with ISA Server 2004. Maybe others have the same issue? Incoming VPN works fine. Hope that helps someone. I would, of course, be interested in a resolution to this problem!

Folks, This might be happening because of the encryption settings on client and server. In Vistaweak encryption is not supported by default any more (40 and 56 bit for PPTP and DES for L2TP). Only 128-bit, AES and 3DESstrong encryptionare supported. Refer to blog http://blogs.technet.com/rrasblog/archive/2006/11/01/vista-lh-security-changes-for-remote-access-scenarios.aspx. In case you want to re-enable weak encryption algorithms you can do that by changing certain reg. keys. This is mentioned in the blog too. thanks Aanand

Sorry, Aanand - nothing quite so easy. At least not for me. I can use VPN if I disconnect from my SBS network, and go via my mobile phone card, socompatibility of settings between my Vista and the target SBS seems OK. The fact that a direct internet connection works wouldsuggestthat it is a firewallproblem. After searching the internet, all thatI have found that made sense (but which doesn't solve my problem) is that ISA 2004 sends some security identifier that my router is not passing on. I replaced my ADSL router / modem with a Linksys WAG54G. No joy. Itried disabling the ISA 2004 and even deinstalled it. Still no joy! It used to work OK until I upgraded the SBS at my end with 2003 R2 with ISA 2004. I support clients from home and it really is a problem to me to not have this ability. Can anyone help? Thanks, Alan Miles.

Hi fellas my VPN server is SBS 2003 R2 and I can connect VPN with any version of Vista but only with administrator rights, when I tried to connect as aregular user accountI get an error "Vista Event ID812The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPN server. Specifically, the authentication method used by the server to verify your username and password may not match the authentication method configured in your connection profile. Please contact the Administrator of the RAS server and notify them of this error." I have no problem connecting from a XP box, Thanks

Hi people! The problem is back. I encountered to this problem with one of my clients (Vista Business SP1) and suddenly I got the same problem in my laptop (Vista Business SP1 also). I get to the "verifying username and password" stage, but after that it just disconnects (oh and the username and password are correct because I tested them on a XP machine). The same VPN connection did work yesterday with the same settings. Is this solved or what? Last post was from a year ago... Below the error or as Event Viewer calls it: "Information". Hi, (my first post)I'm experiencing the same problems as described above.. VPN-connection from Vista to W2K3 RRAS connects for a few seconds/minutes, and then disconnects with error 'Cannot enumerate Registry key values. tunnel' in the eventlog. During this connected-time, I cannot use the VPN-connection, although i've got an IP-adres from the DHCP (RRAS)-server. Connection from an XP-client to the same RRAS works fine. Gr. Stick

After enabling the Require Data Encryption (Disconnect if none)option under the network settings and security tabof the VPN connection I am able to stay connected.

I am running Vista Ultimate (SP1) - remote wksSBS 2003 R2 - target VPN serverOn the server end I have a SonicWall Router, with a rule for PPTP(1723) to forward to the target server's internal IP address.I had the same result as most who posted here. I turned on my sniffer and watched the communication between my remote wks and the target server. I was using an RDP connection to the server and watching traffic with WireShark. As most everyone who posted, it does make a connection and then fails because no protocols can be successfully negotiated. In the System event log I had numerous Event: 20050 Source: RemoteAccess errors logged.I ran rrasmgmt.msc from Start/Run, right clicked on the Server, chose properties, chose the IP tab, and reviewed the setting under the heading: Use the following adapter to obtain, DHCP, DNS and WINS addresses for dial-up clients. It was set to: Local Area Connection 4I changed it to: Allow RAS to select adapter.I minimized the RDP connection and tried my VPN connection again and it connected almost immediately.I hope that can be of use to others.Roland HallHouston, TX Roland Hall

ur HDCP not Assign IPs for the VPN Clients So u better enable it on the DHCP or assign IPs range for the VPN Clients on the ISA server
