Vista Update Results in Loss of Internet Access
My nephew has a HP dv6000 laptop with a Broadcom 802.11 b-g-n wi-fi adapter. When I went to visit, they reported that he was unable to access the Internet, even though he was able to connect to the wi-fi router. After sometime spent tryingto figure it out I did a Recovery of the computer. After that, it worked fine. I then started installing the Vista updates. All was fine until I reached one which the problem came back. I used the Restore point to return the computer to its previous state. I disabled Windows Update (I thought) and was going to do some research. Three months later I returned to find the computer again unable to access the Internet. The Wi-Fi connection showed two bars, this was something I noticed before. When I had the 'bad' update, the bars would go from 5 down to 2. With the bars at 2, I pinged www.google.com which worked fine. Opening IE7 and trying to go to Google, it failed to connect. I then tried to get to the router which also failed even though the ping worked to the router. I restored the computer to the last time I was there and it started to work again. I installed all the Vista updates from July to the latest including a Broadcom driver update. After the install, the issue came back. I rolled the driver back to the previous version, rebooted, but still no Internet access. I went back to the July restore point and then installed Vista SP1 and again the issue returned and again I went back to the restore point. Also, I enabled/disabled the Firewall which did not solve anything. My nephew does use AOL and AIM. Even when the laptop does work, access the Internet, he cannot log into AIM, a connection failed error is received. My question, is the problem with the Broadcom driver and Vista; IE7 and the Broadcom driver; IE7 and AOL/AIM; or all three or something completely different.

My question, is the problem with the Broadcom driver and Vista; IE7 and the Broadcom driver; IE7 and AOL/AIM; or all three or something completely different. Most likely, none of the above. One or more of the Windows updatesreplacedsome ofthe core IE files. If you're running a third-partyantivirus/security suite (usually one that includes a firewall), such as Norton, McAfee, etc., that will cause the suite to no longer allow IE to function.Fixes range from simply removing and re-adding IE as an allowed app, to updating the security suite (IIRC, McAfee in particular has this 'problem.')

Hi, Could you please confirm the following points first? 1. Can you narrow down which update cause the problem? 2. Do you have third party browser? If so, does it work? 3. When the issue occurs, can you access Internet in Safe Mode? In addition, it is suggested to install the Broadcom driver from HP official website directly. I won't be able to answer most of your questions until I visit my nephew again in December. In Safe Mode I couldn't access the Internet. The machine had no 3rd party browser but that was one avenue I was going to look at next time. I will try the installing the Broadcom drivers directly from HP. I will also try to re-install IE7.
