Hi, Thank you for your post. Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following points with you: 1. When does the update issue occur? 2. Is it a standalone computer? Is this computer the only one in this environment (network)? 3. Which update package cannot be installed? A specific one or all? In addition, please perform the following steps to rename SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders. Rename SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders using BAT file======================================= 1. Click Start, type notepad in Start Search box, and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop Cryptsvcren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SD.old ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.oldnet start wuauserv net start Cryptsvc 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location.4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, choose Run as administrator. 5. You will see a DOS-like window processing. After that, please check if the issue is resolved. If it persists, please collect the following information for further research: 1. WindowsUpdate.log---------------1.1. Click Start, type %windir% in Start Search box, and press Enter.1.2. Please upload the WindowsUpdate.log to the following space:https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=fa5883b4-42cb-4307-94d5-d9920b678cecPassword: +7{xj$%Wg@UX 2. System Information--------------2.1. Click Start, type msinfo32 on the Start Search box2.2. On the System Information window, and click File, click Save to export the system information to a .NFO file.2.3. Upload the file to the same space Note: please post a quick note in the current thread to inform me after uploading the information. Thanks. I look forward to your reply. Hi All, Thank you for sending us the files. To the one who sent the System Information file named fixing win.nfo, it seems the 0x8000ffff error appears when installing KB929777. If we misunderstood, please let us know. To troubleshoot the issue, first please check if KB929777 is listed in Control Panel\Programs and Features\View installed updates. If so, please uninstall it. Then download KB929777 onto the Desktop from the following site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=KB929777%20&DisplayLang=en. After that, please restart the computer and keep pressing F8 to enter Safe Mode. Double-click the downloaded package to install KB929777. Does the error still occur? If the update cannot be installed in Safe Mode, please return to Normal Mode and perform a Clean Boot before the installation. Clean Boot ========= Lets disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click Start, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please check if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment. If so, please use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. To the one who sent us the System Information file named 8000ffff.nfo, please also try to clean boot the computer and then reset IE. Reset IE ======= 1. Click Start, type inetcpl.cpl (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter to open the Internet options window. 2. Switch to the Advanced tab. 3. Click "Reset Internet Explorer Settings". 4. Click Reset to confirm the operation. 5. Click Close when the resetting process has completed. 6. Uncheck the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option in the Settings box. 7. Click Apply, and click OK. If the issue persists, lets reinstall Windows Update agent 3.0. Reinstall Windows Update agent 3.0 ====================== 1. Download Windows Update agent 3.0 to D:\ from the following link: http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe Note: Please do not download it to the system drive (C:\). Otherwise, we cannot install it. 2. Click start, click All Programs, click Accessories. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator. 3. Type the following command and press Enter. D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce Note: There is a space between D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and /wuforce. Then try to install the updates again. Hope it helps. Hi Jakes, Plese try this.....I hope it will work. Resolution(s):=======================1) For Vista, you can use the "Check online for Updates from Windows Update" link at the bottom of WuApp to get updates from the WU site when not connected to Corp Net.or1) Set the "Specify intranet Microsoft update service location" Policy to "Not Configured":This policy is located here:"Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Updates"2) If the WSUS settings are NOT being applied via Group Policy, modify the following registry keyHKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate\AUFrom: UseWUServer REG_DWORD 0x1To: UseWUServer REG_DWORD 0x0Note: If you get the error 8000FFFF after implementing the above solution, restart the machine and attempt Windows update again. I completed the first 5 steps. I attempted the next "set" of steps, but was notified that the password was invalid. I bought my MS Gateway in Feb. 2007. I have never been able to download ANY updates, security or system - since installing Vista in May 2007. I am using 32-bit Vista. In receive daily the following message: Code 8000FFFF I have tried all the suggestions from various tech sites and am very frustrated with Microsoft Vista. I recently bought a new IPod. I cannot download/install ITunes as it conflicts w/Vista. Please help me resolve the inability of Vista to check for and install necessaryupdates. I own this computer,myMicrosoft Windows program, and my MS Vista program - ALL legally. Therefore: I have a legal right to utilize necessary updates as soon as they become available. I have the legal right to expecttheMicrosoft Cooperation to provideproblem resolutions within a timely fashion. Eleven months is not "timely." Please advise a proven resolution to this problem upon receipt of this email. Thank you.

I have the exact same problem, i just bought an ASUS F3K series laptop, preloaded with vista home. I took it out of the box, turned on wireless, and went to windows update. All i've ever gotten was the code 8000FFFF error. I'm installing XP as we speak.

I have the same error code 8000ffff message and have not been able to update windows at all since i bought my maching in late november. it is now the middle of january. i have tried every single fix that has been available on these threads and not one has even shown a sign of working. I am very frustrated as are all of these people and i feel that i have been and continue to be taken by microsoft with this horrendous operating system. I want a resolution to this problem that actually works. Along with this windows update problem i couldnt connect to the symantec server to instal my norton, i had to call and spend over an hour on the phone to get the symantec people to remotely log on to my computer to instal the program. It seems to me that if some guy half way across the world can solve a connection problem then the great minds at microsoft should be able to figure this out

Determined all client's Automatic Updates were configured via GPO to point to a WSUS Server that was no longer available on the network.Evidence of this is the existence of the following registry key and values:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdateWUServer REG_SZ http://trans-srvWUStatusServer REG_SZ http://trans-srvTargetGroupEnabled REG_DWORD 0x1TargetGroup REG_SZ TransechNote: All Windows versions prior to Vista can manually access Windows Update even though Automatic Updates is configured to point to WSUS.However, if Vista is configured for WSUS via group policy, it will error if the WSUS server is invalid or inaccessible due to network issues. This issue can also occur if the Vista Client machine has been moved off the network (ie: Portable laptops) where it can no longer cannot access the configured WSUS server.Resolution(s):=======================1) For Vista, you can use the "Check online for Updates from Windows Update" link at the bottom of WuApp to get updates from the WU site when not connected to Corp Net.or1) Set the "Specify intranet Microsoft update service location" Policy to "Not Configured":This policy is located here:"Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Updates"2) If the WSUS settings are NOT being applied via Group Policy, modify the following registry keyHKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate\AUFrom: UseWUServer REG_DWORD 0x1To: UseWUServer REG_DWORD 0x0Note: If you get the error 8000FFFF after implementing the above solution, restart the machine and attempt Windows update again.
