Vista SP1 and Network List Service
Ok, installed Vista SP1 and now there'sno network icon in system tray but actual internet access works fine. I go to taskbar properties and select always show network icon but the icon I get is the two computers with a red X. I mouse over it and get a window "connection status unknown : the service to detect this status is turned off." So I click the message and I get these options: "More Information. Connect to a Network. Network and Sharing Center". I click more information and a box pops up asking me do I want to turn on Network List Service. I click "turn this on"and windows brings up the UAC prompt for Network and Sharing Center. I click continue but the network icon does not change to a globe even after a reboot. I go into the list of services in the Administrative Tools control panel and attempt to turn on Network List Service there and I get this message "The Network List Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs." The services which this service depend on all are running, although there also is the TCP/IP Protocol driver and NSI Proxy service whose status I don't know. SL UI Notification Service which depends on the Network List Service service won't start and I went through my list of services to see if I there were any other services dependant on Network List Service that I could turn on but there were not. So this is a Catch-22 situation. The only apparent service (SL UI ...) which depends on Network List Service won't start because Network List Service won't start and Network List Service won't start because there are no services which use it.Not having the right icon for the Internet in the system tray does not worry me as I have full Internet access. What worries me is what the SL UI Notification Servicehas to do with activation as I don't want my (genuine) copy of Vista suddenly becoming de-activated! Currently, Vista states it is activated. Should I uninstall SP1 in the meantime? DrStrange

Hi DrStrange, Thank you for the post. As this issue happens after installing SP1, I suggest discussing the issue in our Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) forum. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1992&SiteID=17 Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. As with all replies on this board, nobody even tried to give you a useful answer. I'm an extremely experienced repair person, and you won't like the answer. Vista is broken. It cannot be repaired. If Microsoft (or Apple, for that matter,) were ever held accountable for all the worthless products they have sold, they would be out of business.
