Vista RC1: Problems with changing Computer Name
Hi thereI'm currently testing Windows Vista RC1. When i try to change the Computer name. Vista shows me an error message."The following error occured attempting to change the computername to "test": Access is denied. In the application log i traced it down to an Event-ID 257. Is this behaviour based on restrictions made in the RC1 or is it a Bug?Thanks in advance.Greetings Bastian Widmer

To accomplish what you are looking for, right mouse click on command prompt > Run as administrator. At the command line, type sysdm.cpl and carry out the computer name change. You will need to restart the computer to effect the change. Please let us know if this works for you. Thanks!

I tried to change the name in the way you described it...The Error Message is the same and the namechange won't work.I thougt that it must be the UAC but i didn't find a Workaround for this Problem.

Why not disable UAC, change name and then enable UAC again to test it?

I have the same problem and neither of the suggested solution above helps. Still get the Access denied prompt when changing the computername. Any more suggestions? Br Tobias

Go to Control Panel, in Users, check User Access Contol (UAC) tool and try to disable/enable it so that you get a prompt for permissions to continue command or cancel it. This tool is so helpful for all users so that important commands not to executed silently (due to a hacker or backdoor or virus...etc). Good luck
